What a Cable Bicycle Lock is Good for After a Key Gets Stuck

Leanna Teague
A cable bicycle lock has a lot of functional uses other than securing a bicycle from potential bicycle burglars. It might be used to secure lawn mowers to a backyard porch railing, as added security protection if attached to the wheel of a car and its base so it won't turn or to hold securely the pot of a plant to a stand. It could be used to hang tools in a shed or a bird feeder around a thick branch.

On occasion a cable bicycle lock might wound up with a key stuck in it that won't come out but ironically the locking mechanism is still functional and the key will still turn. The problem is that with a key stuck in the lock when you lock things up to secure them from prowlers the key will still be there.

A key can become stuck from a lot of things. The wrong key is put in, a key is forced in backward, a spare key doesn't properly fit-the grooves and ridges are off and something inside the lock moved slightly out of alignment caught the key and is holding it stuck.

When a key becomes stuck in a lock and the lock still works, it can open and close, it can still be functional. You might want to use it for these things.

To keep your garden hoses elevated and untangled.

Drop the cable bicycle lock over a bar on a kid's swing set, make sure to place it to the side out of the kid's way, and close it locked. Take the water hose, poke it through the center of the cable and loop it through and around the cable the way you would if you were winding it around your arm. When done the hose will be untangled and elevated. You may do the same by finding a lower thick branch that is strong enough to support a hose.

Need extra lighting is your workroom?

If you have a flashlight with a big enough hole it its top, preferable one that can sit on its side, you could slide the open end of the lock through the hole and shut it closed. Drape the cable over the doorknob and close the door. Turn on the flashlight.

Do you have a small container or box, which you can't keep the lid closed?

Wrap the cable lock around the box or container and lock it closed to hold the lid shut.
