Most pregnant women will experience abdominal pain at some point before they give birth. Although there are many cases in which abdomen pain is normal, there are times when it should be taken very seriously, however. Here are some of the possible causes of abdominal pain during pregnancy.
Ligament Stretching
Ligament stretching is one of the common causes of abdomen pain for women who are pregnant. It generally occurs during the second trimester when the ligament which supports the uterus stretches, according to the American Pregnancy Association. You will usually notice pain on one or both sides of the abdomen and hip area. Ligament stretching is a normal part of pregnancy.
Gas Pains
If you are experiencing bloating, burping, heartburn, constipation, and/or flatulence along with your abdominal pain, there is a good chance that you are experience gas pains. This problem tends to be more common among pregnant women due to hormonal changes which slow down digestion, according to the March of Dimes.
Labor or False Labor
Abdominal pains and cramping may indicate that you're getting ready to go into labor. It could also be a sign of false labor, which is otherwise known as Braxton-Hicks contractions. Pain of the abdomen may also be a sign of preterm labor. If you are at risk for having your baby prematurely, it's important to call your doctor right away if you experience abdominal pain.
Ectopic Pregnancy
Ectopic pregnancy, which happens within the first three months of pregnancy, is caused when a fertilized egg attaches itself outside of the uterus, according to the March of Dimes. If you are having an ectopic pregnancy, it is important for you to be treated right away. Without proper treatment, ectopic pregnancies can be fatal. Signs of an ectopic pregnancy include light vaginal bleeding for a week or more after a missed period and lower abdominal pain which generally affects one side, according to the March of Dimes.
Miscarriage
Miscarriages generally occur within the first three months of pregnancy. The symptoms of a miscarriage can include vaginal bleeding or spotting, fluid or tissue passing from your vagina, and abdominal or lower back pain or cramping, according to the Mayo Clinic. The signs of a miscarriage can be easily mistaken for the signs of ectopic pregnancy. Either way, it is important to seek medical attention immediately if you experience these symptoms.
Abdominal pain during pregnancy is usually normal and caused by ligament stretching or gas pains. If your abdominal pain is severe or accompanied by vaginal bleeding or other symptoms, it's important to seek medical attention right away to rule out any serious causes.
