What Causes Anal Itching?

The Itch You Can't Scratch in Public

Sophie Stillwell
It's the itch that sounds like a joke, but it is no laughing matter - an itchy butthole. Yeah, it makes us all giggle when we say it, but anal itching can be irritating and worrisome. Do you have worms? An infection? How can you possibly talk to your doctor about this? The truth is, you SHOULD talk to your doctor. Anal itch is treatable and there is no reason you should suffer just because it feels awkward bringing it up to your doctor.

Anal Itching Caused by Infection
There are several different types of infections that can cause your anus to itch. According to the Mayo Clinic, pinworms is a common cause for anal itch, particularly among children. Sexual transmitted diseases that have resulted from anal sex can also give you an itchy anus. Women who are prone to vaginal yeast infections may also experience anal yeast infections - but an anal yeast infection isn't limited to just women, men can get them, too. The upside of anal itching caused by infection is that it is easily treatable with a prescription from your doctor.

Anal Itching Caused by Environmental Conditions
No, I don't mean that rainy days equal anal itch - I'm talking about the condition of your anus! Most people can figure out that not wiping properly and leaving fecal matter around the anus can cause an itch. However, anal itching can also be cause by dry skin around the anus or excessive moisture in the general area. Both of these conditions can be treated with a surprising over-the-counter treatment - diaper rash ointment. Diaper rash ointment, which contains zinc oxide, provides the kind of moisture needed by dry skin and creates a barrier from other types of moisture.

Anal Itching Caused by Foods
You may be surprised to learn that certain foods can trigger anal itching. According to the American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons, the most common food sources that cause anal itch are milk products, tomatoes and tomato based foods (like spaghetti sauce), nuts, and caffeinated beverages like coffee or tea. Eliminating these foods from your diet may help eliminate your anal itch.

Other Causes of Anal Itching
Yes, there are some very serious conditions that can cause anal itching, such as anal tumors or colon cancer. Anal tears or fissures (which are tears in anal tissue that extend up into the bowel) can cause bleeding and anal itching. Medications and harsh soaps or detergents can also cause anal itching.

So now you know some of the more common (and uncommon) causes of anal itching. Now it is time to visit the doctor, find out the cause of your anal itch, and get it treated right away!
