What Are the Causes and Effects of Skipping a Day from Your Workout Program?

Aaron Tadeo
If you've been working out for quite some time now and you had or are following a workout program, there's a good chance that you may have skipped a day from your workout. There are lots of reasons such as special events like family gatherings, out of town trips, extended hours in the office, if you're ill and so on. What happens if you skip a day in your workout schedule? Let me share my thoughts and experience.

Well, to some, it doesn't have an effect at all. They can just go right back into the program the next day and easily adjust the dates on their workout calendar. You can just take it as a rest day then move on. Some even do 2 routines a day (the one they missed the previous day and the scheduled workout for the current day) to make up for lost time. This is quite hard but with enough motivation and more rest, you can do this if you'd like.

This may affect your goals since your program becomes delayed due to the day that you missed. As I've mentioned on my previous articles, I am guilty of skipping a day from my workout schedule and it was just to have an extra day of rest. What happened was, the number of rest days became more frequent until the time came that every day became a rest day and I had to do go back to the beginning of the program. It reflected on the results since I only lost less than 10 pounds after a few months which were quite far from my goal. Sadly, I know some people who experienced the same thing as I did and I'm pretty sure it happened to lots of people who I don't know as well.

One thing you have to be wary of is loss of momentum. To a lot of people, losing momentum can even break an entire workout program. Let's say you're into your workout and have been constantly following your schedule for 3 weeks. If you miss a day, it could be hard to get back the next day. Just keep a positive mindset. See it as an opportunity to challenge yourself and not as a drawback.

But always remember that the effects of missing a day or so in a workout program differ from person to person though. We also have to understand that there are things that we have no control of. Just do your best to get back on track with your schedule. I'm pretty sure catching up for a day that was missed isn't too hard. You can always modify your schedules and sometimes, small changes in your routine could be helpful to alleviate boredom from repetition.

Once you're back, you'll most likely shrug that one lost day off and get your momentum back. It's really tempting to take a day off from working out especially if your workout consists of tiring high impact and intense routines. Just don't push yourself too much but act immediately if you skipped a day in your workout.
