What Causes Sleepless Nights?

Why Can't I Get to Sleep?

Carole Anne Somerville
There is nothing more frustrating than lying awake at night for hours, feeling tired and frustrated but unable to get to sleep.

Some sleep problems can be avoided by recognising what it is that's causing this mental or physical unrest. A new bed could make a big difference. So can wearing ear-plugs if the house is too noisy or an eye mask to block out the light. Sometimes it isn't so easy to pinpoint why insomnia strikes. So what are the main causes of sleeplessness?

An old bed or mattress can cause physical aches and pains that will build up over time and affect the body during the daytime too. Buying a new mattress can often ease the problem when not only will you get a better night's slumber but you will find the shoulder pain or that constant ache in your hip will vanish too.

To Eat or Not to Eat Before Bedtime for a Good Night's Sleep?

Too much food before going to bed is likely to keep you awake at night as it will leave you feeling bloated and gassy. Conversely, hunger can also cause insomnia or might wake you up during the night or the early hours of the morning. For that reason, a light snack just before bedtime might help you enjoy a better night's slumber.

Coffee should be avoided as caffeine is not conducive to a good night's sleep. Chocolate can also have a lively affect on the brain which isn't particularly helpful when trying to get to sleep. Alcohol is one of the most common causes of a sleepless night.

What can Cause Insomnia?

Sleeping too much during the day can make it difficult for you to fall asleep at night. If you're suffering from insomnia, cut out the naps during the daylight hours.

Physical discomfort can be another cause of sleepless nights. This includes indigestion, headaches, restless legs and general aches and pains.

Nightmares can cause insomnia. These are often symptoms of anxiety, worry or depression and this sleep problem might be overcome by coming to terms with the underlying fears or uncertainties.

Stressful days can lead to problems getting to sleep at night when there are so many worries and concerns whirling around the mind that it is hard to still your thoughts. Relationship problems, money worries, work issues and emotions such as upset, anger, disappointment, jealousy and suspicion can all have a negative affect on sleep patterns. Equally excitement due to anticipation makes it difficult to sleep.

Should sleep problems continue for any length of time, you are advised to seek professional guidance.
