What the CDC Didn't Say About the Zombie Apocalypse

Tammy Lee Morris
The Centers for Disease Control blogged about preparing for a zombie apocalypse but the tongue-in-cheek reminder to prepare for emergency left out some important information specific to zombies. After a tornado strikes, an earthquake shakes, hurricanes, floods and wildfires end, there are still dangers--but not the same type of dangers zombies pose. The CDC took the right step by addressing the concerns about zombies but there are a few more things that need to be remembered during an outbreak of zombie.

An earthquake doesn't chase you down and try to eat you so dealing with the aftermath is just a little bit different--a detail the CDC failed to explain. When preparing for the zombie apocalypse, weapons are required.

An aluminum baseball bat is a good choice and a personal favorite to deal with zombies but I also believe a good shotgun is a must-have zombie-killing weapon. Remember, zombies will keep coming back and just because you get rid of one, you're not done. More of the undead will show up to knock on your door and ask for a snack--so be ready to dispatch them effectively.

A fortified place to take shelter is ideal, with a moat and a high point of observation to keep an eye on the advancing flesh-eaters is also a good choice when making plans.

Whether you are planning for natural disasters, terrorism, or even zombies--an important part of stockpiling that can't be stressed enough in my opinion is toilet paper. You can never have enough toilet paper and being able to take care of the necessities of life with soft two-ply rather than a corn cob or scratchy leaves can improve your outlook a great deal in the midst of the apocalypse. Stock up now.

There are many ways to plan ahead for zombies and while the CDC is on the right track--get people's attention to talk about emergency planning--the average person on the street who is concerned with flesh-eating former neighbors also needs to be prepared to take necessary precautions.

Don't simply ignore the fact that a zombie outbreak could actually happen. Anything is possible, and apparently the CDC doesn't even shy away from the subject.

So be ready--survival during any disaster won't be easy but zombies will add a unique element that requires planning and thinking "outside the box."
