In general, All Star games in professional sports have lost much of their allure when compared to All Star games of generations past. There are many factors for this; much of it has to do with the general accessibility of all games today. When All Star games were at their height of popularity, the availability to watch all games via satellite, online or through countless highlight shows did not exist. All Star games represented the chance to watch players who normally played in far away markets.

There is also generally more player movement today. In baseball, basketball and football, players change leagues and conferences with ease. As a result, the pride factor, which may have existed in years past for players in representing their conference or league is not what it once was.

Similarly, the games themselves are today geared much more to the highlight reel. Great defense is not what creates excitement in All Star games; fans are generally looking for spectacular offensive plays.

For the basketball purist, this all creates a bit of a problem for the All Star game. While it may be exciting to watch alley-oops, three point shots and fast breaks, the essence of basketball, which includes team defense, ball movement and half court execution, is, undeniably, missing.
