What Channel and What Time is the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings Game on in the New York City Area?
The Giants were en route to Minneapolis on Saturday when their plane was re-routed to Kansas City because of a massive snowstorm in the twin cities. While they waited to travel to Minneapolis, officials at the Vikings home stadium, the Metrodome, expressed concern to the NFL about the amount of snow that had accumulated on the stadium's roof. As if on cue, the Metrodome's roof, which was under nearly two feet of snow, collapsed early Sunday morning. A new site for the game needed to be selected.
Given that both teams had prepared for a climate neutral game, and given the fact that the Giants were not traveling with cold weather gear, the NFL did not seriously consider playing the game at the nearby University of Minnesota stadium and instead evaluated dome stadiums in New Orleans, Indianapolis and Detroit. Finally, Ford Field in Detroit, the home of the Lions, was selected and both teams traveled there for what now will be a Monday night game.
Even though all tickets will be free, attendance at the game will likely be much lower than what it would be at a typical NFL game as both the Giants and the Vikings are out of town teams with limited fan bases in Detroit.
There is, however, a novelty aspect to the whole thing that will probably drive television ratings higher than they might otherwise be. Unlike the ESPN Monday Night Football game, however, the Giants and Vikings will not be on for a national audience; it will not be shown in the Detroit market, for example.
The move of the game to a neutral site helps the Giants as they won't have to play in Minnesota and a pro-Vikings crowd. However, the extra day off gives injured Vikings quarterback Brett Favre an extra day to recover...and may allow him to play more than he would have otherwise.
Coincidentally, the Giants were involved in the last game to be moved from a stadium as the New Orleans Saints played an extra road game in the old Giants Stadium when Hurricane Katrina forced the team to move its games to other stadiums.
Those in the New York City area do not get an extra home game to attend this time around. But they will be at home watching the G-Men take on the Vikings on Monday night and they are asking, "What channel and what time is the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings game on Monday night in the New York City area?" The answer is that the game will be televised on Fox Channel 5 and kickoff is scheduled for 7:20PM.
