What Channel and What Time is the Giants and Jets Game on Tonight?
Football Season Approaches as the New York Teams Christen the New Meadowlands Stadium
To answer the easy questions first, the New York Giants and New York Jets game will kick off on ESPN tonight at 8:00PM EDT.
For years, the Jets and Giants shared the now demolished Giants Stadium. Giants Stadium, as the name suggests, belonged to the Giants and the Jets were merely tenants. With the New Meadowlands Stadium (which surely will be renamed once they find a corporate sponsor), the Giants and Jets are equal partners and owners.
Whenever the Giants and the Jets play, and they usually do every pre-season, there has always been some awkwardness and confusion. For example, who, exactly, is the home team; this question takes on added significance tonight as it is the first event ever at the New Meadowlands Stadium. Both the Jets and the Giants wanted the opportunity to play the first game at the New Meadowlands Stadium. In fact it was decided by a coin flip that the Jets' ownership later questioned the validity of.
But the league has tried to make things as equitable as possible. The first football game, albeit a pre-season one, will be played by both teams. While there have been other events at the New Meadowlands Stadium, such as an Eagles concert over the summer, both the Jets and Giants will take the field at their co-owned home at the same time. As the Giants will play the first regular season game at the New Meadowlands Stadium, when they host the Carolina Panther s on Sunday, September 12th, the Jets get the honor of being designated the home team tonight.
Being the 'home team', even though it is the home stadium for both teams, means the inside of the New Meadowlands Stadium will be decorated in Jets green, and more importantly, Jets season ticket holders will have most of the tickets tonight and it will be largely a partisan Jets crowd.
The Jets are also taking this opportunity to unveil a 'Ring of Honor'...a Jets Hall of Fame of sorts that will honor six of their most prominent players.
So as the nation sees summer slowly slipping away, it will tune in tonight, for a little while at least, to watch the Jets and Giants play the first game at the New Meadowlands Stadium.
Again, for those wondering what channel the Jets and Giants game is on tonight, it's on ESPN at 8:00PM Eastern.
