What time and what channel is the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers AFC championship game on in the New York City area?

Millions of New York tri-state area residents are snuggling in at home and voiding the frigid northeast temperatures today as they watch the New York Jets play in the AFC championship game for the second consecutive year. Last year, the upstart Jets led the Indianapolis Colts at halftime and nearly shocked the world.

This year, the Jets are not sneaking up on anybody...for a couple of reasons.

For starters, the Jets talked a lot in the preseason and throughout the regular season. They made sure that nobody would take them lightly...even if the many at times wanted to do just that. Head coach Rex Ryan was most notable in his braggadocios nature. He has said repeatedly since before the beginning of the season that he believed his team would go all the way to Dallas and the Super Bowl.

When the Jets started out with a convincing opening week loss to the Baltimore Ravens (they lost 10 to 9 and had a grand total of 6 touchdowns), it looked as if Ryan's mouth was way ahead of his players' ability to produce.

Following the loss, a series of off the field incidents seemed, at times, destined to derail the Jets' season. Braylon Edwards was arrested for DWI, sideline reporter Ines Sainz claimed that she was harassed by Jets players and coaches during practice, and Ryan and his wife apparently were stars in graphic foot fetish videos.

The Jets seemed also to win several games by chance and luck as much as anything else...skeptics said they were fortunate more than good. But to paraphrase former Jets coach Bill Parcells, in the NFL you are whatever your record says you are, and the Jets ended the season with an 11 and 5 record.

They entered the playoffs knowing that they would not have a home game, but beat the Colts in Indianapolis and then the Patriots in New England.

And now, they sit one win from their first Super Bowl since Joe Namath led them to an improbable victory in 1967's Super Bowl III.

Based on the soaring popularity of the NFL, last week's stunning ratings for the divisional playoff games, and the bitter cold temperatures in the New York City region, this AFC championship game may be the highest rated non-Super Bowl game in the history of the NFL.

For those wondering what channel and what time the Jets and Steelers game is on in the New York City area, the answer is on CBS' Channel 2 at 6:30 pm EST.
