What Channel Are the Yankees on Tonight in Game One of the American League Championship Series?
New York Takes on Texas for the Chance to Go to the World Series
While the National Football League is the most popular professional sport in the United States, Major League Baseball is the number one sport in the biggest market in the country, New York City. Nothing makes New York feel like a small town more than the Yankees nearly annual trip to the postseason. Particularly once they advance past the first round, as they did this year by sweeping the Minnesota Twins in what feels like a long time ago, the Big Apple becomes baseball crazy as there is an undeniable buzz in the streets to go with the dry chill in the air.
As a long time resident of Manhattan, I can attest first hand to the special vibe that the Yankees bring to the city, which is more than anything the New York Mets, Giants, Jets, Rangers or Knicks can do.
While the Yankees are in many ways the team that American loves to hate, there is no denying the fact that the ratings are much higher when the Yankees are involved. They symbolize, it seems, everything that is right and everything that is wrong with baseball and with perhaps even the country at large.
Even the most ardent Yankee supporter must admit that the franchise has an incredible advantage given the amount of money it is able, and willing, to spend. The Yankees payroll is nearly $40 million more than the next closest team.
Sometimes lost in that fact, though, is that the modern day Yankees are much more than a bought team. Their famous 'core four' of players, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada are all either sure-fire or borderline Hall of Famers and were drafted by the Yankees and came up to the Major League; no other team can match that level of success through its farm system. Add another young home grown superstar to the mix, in second baseman Robinson Cano, who may very well have a Hall of Fame career himself, and it's clear the Yankees have both drafted and developed players extremely well and also have used their ample resources smartly in free agent signings of players such as Mark Teixeira and CC Sabathia.
The Yankees are the most famous sports franchise in the world while also being simultaneously the most beloved and reviled. Tonight, as the Yankees get ready to take the field for Game One of the American League Championship Series. Many are wondering what channel the Yankees game is on in the New York City area; the answer is on cable network TBS at 8:00PM Eastern Daylight Time.
