For sports fans in the New York City area, the game tonight could hopefully represent some small measure of revenge as last Friday night, the Texas Rangers beat the Yankees in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series to go onto their first ever World Series. While Monday night's game is not as important as a playoff game, the Giants, who enter the game with a 4 and 2 record, have the chance to effectively knock out the Cowboys, who are staggering and enter the game at 1 and 4.
Even though they play different sports, the New York Giants and New York Yankees tend to have a large crossover of fans. They are both the older, established teams (whereas the Mets and Jets tend to still be considered 'the other teams' in town) and they once shared the original Yankee Stadium (before a mid 1970's remodeling).
While surely the players themselves will be thinking only about the game at hand, there would be some small sense of satisfaction, or at least partial retribution, among New York Yankee fans if the Giants can effectively knock the Cowboys out for the season; which a 1 and 5 record would be very close to doing.
Despite the difference in records, however, the task at hand will not be easy for the Giants. They are playing in Dallas...in their almost brand new stadium with over 100,000 on hand. The Cowboys, too, are not as bad as their record would indicate. While their season has been marked by needless penalties and unfocused play, the Cowboys were picked in the preseason to contend for the Super Bowl, which, incidentally, will be held at their stadium this year.
While for the time being the entire Dallas area has become a baseball town as the Rangers prepare for a Wednesday night opening of the World Series, Dallas is still a permanent football town and, sensing desperation, both the players and the fans know that this is desperation time; a loss would be considered a huge waste of talent, money and a shot at playing the Super Bowl on their home field this year.
So while the World Series will include the Cowboy's 'little brother' Rangers, Dallas and New York turn their attention to football tonight.
Many are wondering what channel and what time the Giants are on tonight in the New York City area; the game will be shown live at 8:00PM Eastern Standard Time on ESPN.
