What is Church?

Bridget Ilene Delaney
Many people want to know "what is church?" They look for a place that is comfortable for them. It is important to know that church is not really a "place," but that the word place will be used in this article. The word place is simply going to mean the body of people with whom you gather to praise and worship God, and perhaps receive the sacraments and absolution of sins. There is not a certain place that matters.

However, these are the following things that are important to be a "church."

Church is a place that starts with God and who God is.

Church is a place where the essence is morethen just "doing."

Church is a place that draws its essence from God and God's righteousness and holiness.

Church is a place that takes shape on God's worth as Creator.

Church is a place that reflects God's glory.

Church is a place that recognizes that the answers are not found in humans but in the Grace of God and the Power of the Holy Spirit.

Church is a place that does not focus on numbers.

Church is people placed together by God's wisdom.

Church is people led by spiritual leaders of God's choosing.

Church is people living out life together in community for the glory of God.

Church is people submitting to one another and God's authority.

Church is people revealing God's grace and wisdom to everyone around.

Church is a community of faith.

Church is a gathering of called out ones who know the Lord and who have been placed together by Christ.

Church is a place that feeds the souls of people.

Church is a living organism known as the body of Christ.

Church is a place that renews, reenergizes, and, provides rest.

Church is a place that provides rest, but not inactivity.

Church is a place where people can entrust their spiritual lives to others.

Church is a place that creates a pervading sense of joy present even in the aches of life.

Church is a storehouse of deep meaning that leads to intelligent service yielding great satisfaction.

Church is worshipful celebrations that exalt the living God.

Church is the perfect heavenly medication to stabilize people in an unstable world.

Church is a household of faith.

Church is a community of the redeemed.

Church is the people of God.

Church is family.

Church is a royal priesthood.

Church is a holy nation.

Most of all church is a community of faith in Christ characterized by ever deepening relationships with God and people.

If your community of worship does not fit the above descriptions, then it may be time to seek a different place of worship.
