What Can You Do with a Citrus Rind?

Citrus rinds are something that usually get thrower away or they get put down the garbage disposal. I mean, what do you do with them when you have used all your recipe asks for? Luckily there are a few things that can be done with citrus rinds after the amount called for has been taken from them.

A suet bowl can be made from a citrus rind. This works great from either a grapefruit or an orange rind. The citrus rind should be one of the halves of the complete fruit to make this bowl. You will also need to pick up some suet-birdseed mixture and some string to hang the bowl in a tree. Simply place the suet-birdseed mixture in the citrus rind, wrap the string around the citrus rind and hang in a tree. The birds in the area will soon show up to enjoy your masterpiece.

Citrus rinds are excellent for cleaning pans and for freshening cutting boards and fireplaces. An aluminum pan that has been blackened can be cleaned by allowing citrus rinds to boil in it. To freshen up a cutting board simply rub the cutting board all over with the citrus rind. Tossing citrus rinds into a burning fireplace will help freshen up the air.

Citrus rinds are also used to deodorize closets when they are placed into small mesh bags and hung in the closet. Orange or lemon peels work best for this use. Potpourri can also be made better by adding citrus rinds to them, which makes for a great aroma when placed in a room or throughout the home.

Tea can be made better by adding citrus peel to the leaves while the tea is brewing. If you do not want to brew a whole pot of tea with citrus peel, simply add a few strips to your individual cup of tea.

Nails can also benefit from citrus rinds. Use the pith of the citrus rinds to clean nails after doing chores. To do this simply press the nail tips down into the pith. Lemon rinds work best for this application, but the others will also do if there are no lemon rinds in your kitchen.

Citrus rinds do not have to be immediately disposed of any more. Now they can be used before they are disposed of. So, use the citrus rinds to accomplish one or more of these chores before you deodorize your garbage disposal or garbage can.
