What College Students Want to Receive in the Mail

College Students Can Be Picky About Their Gifts!

Thomas Griffin
Simple fact number 1: College students like to receive mail!

Whether they say it or not, college students love to receive mail in general. I believe this phenomenon is to due to the fact that since they now perceive themselves as adults, they want to participate in all the things that adults do. One of those things is receiving mail (minus the whole "bills" thing). If you can remember back to when you were a kid, you can think of times when you were so excited to receive your own mail. College is no different - students are still kids at heart ancy to check their mailboxes. Now you are probably wondering "What in the world would a college student want to receive in the mail?" Luckily for you, I have just the tips that can help you decide what to send. Here are some things that you can do to help your college student make the most of his/her mailbox checking experience!

Money is the best tangible gift you can give to a college student. As a college student myself (and speaking on behalf of countless others), we are always in need of money! The stereotype of college students being poor originated from some form of truth - the truth that many college students are indeed lacking in finances. One of the best ways to encourage your college student is to send them a cash gift with a written note. Cold hard cash is practical and very useful for any college student because it reaches to the immediate needs of the student. Oh, and by the way, this applies for other gift giving times of the year concering college students - don't just limit it to mail!

Another highly useful gift you can send in the mail is a gift card. Be sure that your gift cards are relevant to the stores where your college student lives. In particular, send gift cards to fast food restaurants (like Wendy's or McDonalds) or to super stores (like WalMart or Target). Remember, most college students don't have a lot of money, so they will want to make the most of their money by using it at dollar menu fast food restaurants or low-priced superstores.

If you desire to send food to your college student via mail, send things that are pre-packaged or easy to fix. Many college students don't have the time (probably more the desire than the time, but for the sake of integrity, we'll call it time) to cook full blown meals, so sending things like Pop Tarts, Maccaroni and Cheese, Cereals and other easy to fix meals are wonderful. College students also like the sweets (things don't change much from home, eh?), so you could send cookies or brownie mixes as well. I have found from personal experience and from talking with other college students that it is best to send popular food name labels. Specialties generally do not go over well as a gift - just send the basic, popular meal items.

Finally, look back to my first point. College students want to receive mail! Even if you don't have a gift to give them, send your thoughts and encouragements through letters. Take the time to write out thoughtful and meaningful letters. While you may not receive a thank you note in return, be sure that you have just made the day of that particular college student who received your mail.

Keep these thoughts tucked away - they may be useful some day!

Gift cards are wonderful. I still use snail mail quite a bit and enjoy when I receive a letter the old fashioned way!

I agree with Abby. Kids are so used to texting and getting E-Mails, I would think that getting mail is a little old fashion.

These are all fantastic ideas I had not thought of. Thanks friend. Great suggestions. I keep in touch with all my former Sunday school students now in college or High School grads thru Facebook. I want to never lose the connection I had with these beloved ones of mine. : - )

I still have letters I received back in my college days:) An added bonus is they're fun to read years later.

I get tired of hearing only about writing to military personnel and never a word about supporting our college students. Thanks for the reminder, Thomas.

T - I think most people - college students, too - still enjoy getting real mail! I know that I do. A thoughtful, encouraging note goes a long way when you are a long way from home! Cheers.

I sorta find it hard to imagine that with their knowledge of the technical gadets available that they look forward to the mail! My niece is in college and never remembers to go to her mailbox to see if she had any!
