What to Consider Before Buying Gift Cards

Amy Brantley
Gift cards can seem like the perfect gift. But, is any gift card as good as another? Would your gift recipient's feelings be hurt by receiving a gift card? As you can see, there are things to consider before rushing out and buying gift cards for everyone on your shopping list. Here are a few things to consider before you go shopping.

Will the Gift Card Be Useful?

Each year, people receive gift cards that they never plan to use. It's usually because the store doesn't carry anything that want or it's not convenient. Before buying a gift card, consider whether or not the person will actually use it. Is the store conveniently located? Is it a restaurant the person enjoys? Does the person have anything against the store? It's important to consider these questions if you want to give the gift recipient something she'll actually use.

Is It Something They Need?

There's a good chance that anyone on your list would love to receive a gift card to a favorite restaurant. But, there are times when people on your list have more urgent needs. For example, if the person just lost a job, a gift card to a local grocery store would be much more useful. Another example is a gift card to a local department store so a recently moved out child can purchase things for his new home. It's not always about fun. Sometimes the best gifts are those that give someone what is needed.

Do They Have a Lot of Money?

If you're shopping for someone that is well off, gift cards can be a big letdown. If the person is able to go out and buy whatever she wants, why would she want a gift card? In this case, it's important to think of something unique or even make a gift that can't be purchased. Otherwise, you'll fail when it comes to this gift.

Did They Spend Time Picking Out Your Gifts?

Gift cards can sometimes be an insult. This is because many people believe gift cards don't require a lot of thought. If you have people on your list that spend hours picking out the perfect gifts, do not buy them a gift card. It may take more time and effort, but in this case, a gift card is not the answer.

You Have No Idea What to Get. Now What?

If you have absolutely no idea what the person likes or wants, get a Visa or Mastercard gift card. This is by far your best bet. These cards can be used almost anywhere. The only downside is there are often fees associated with buying these cards. Otherwise, this is a gift card that almost anyone would love to receive.

Very good point w/ your article. Seems like people think of gift cards as the easy/great alternative, but at this time of year who wants to think of having to do more shopping

Good points! I have to agree with Sophie. I think that if the person puts the right amount of thought into the location of the gift card, it can be a good idea.

It can be tough shopping for some people. I wouldn't be offended if someone gave me a gift card though, as it's the thought that counts.
