Nevertheless getting a pet is totally different than when a newborn baby comes in your life and it is important to pay attention to certain issues before you consider buying or adopting a pet. Every kind of pet has his own lifestyle and it is important to find out which pet is suitable for you and that you are sure you will have enough time for your pet.
How often do we read in newspapers or magazines how people have bought a pet because they were lonely but couldn't take the time to care for their pet? Often the consequence is they take the animal to the shelter or they go to the vet for an injection to put the animal to sleep.
When you consider buying or adopting a pet it is important to know which kind of animal best fits your lifestyle. Do you like dogs or cats or do you prefer a bird? Perhaps you enjoy little animals like hamsters or rabbits? You probably have a preference for one of these or even another one but that is certainly not the only factor which determines the best choice.
The choice is probably easier when you live alone than in the event you have children. It is important everyone in your family will like the idea of having a pet in your house. If you live in an apartment there are certain rules and it is not always allowed to have animals there. Ask your property before you buy a pet if pets are allowed, otherwise you will have immediate problems.
Dogs and cats are animals which are popular as a pet for many people. Both are social animals but a dog needs more attention. Dogs don't like to be alone and it is important you train them very well. Mostly you need to teach them some basic commands like sit, wait, stay, come and many others. Adopting a puppy is a lifetime agreement and you need to be sure someone can walk every day with them. If you travel it is mostly not possible to take your dog with you. If not all your family members go with you there is no problem because someone can care for your dog but otherwise you need to search for someone who you can trust to feed your dog and to take him for a walk.
Cats also need some time to play; they don't require as much time as dogs but if you like to see your cat happy it is necessary that you spend some time every day with your cat. Their normal lifespan is normally longer than dogs; you need to be aware that you need to typically care for them a longer time than dogs. In general we can say cats live about five years longer than dogs. It's important to know that cats need to scratch. Provide your house with a suitable scratching post for your cat and one that she will like and can use when she feels like it. Don't obligate your cat to scratch; she knows perfectly when she needs it. A tree stump is a kind of scratching post most cats like and it is best to you put it in an area which is used by the family.
Your budget is very important in making the choice of your pet. No matter if you choose a dog, a cat or another animal you need to be sure you can afford to care for your pet. Not only is the purchase of your pet important but also the extra costs like food, the vet, vaccinations, toys and eventually costs of training.
Another important factor is you need to be informed about the breed you choose. For example in the case of dogs you can buy a puppy which is very small but can become very large after a time. It is important you know if you want a small dog or a large one. Be informed about the characteristics of the breed; no matter if it is a dog or a cat; every breed has its own characteristics and you need to be sure that it fits with the pet you want.
Maybe you prefer to choose a bird. Most people think birds are easy to care for; they look beautiful and are intelligent. Parrots are very popular because many of them can talk and it looks nice to have such a bird in your house. Many don't consider that most of them need a lot of attention. It is important the cage for your bird is large enough because they need to spread their wings. Buying more than one bird is often a good idea because they need company and mostly you don't have the time to spend hours with them.
Before you buy a bird you need to be sure you are available to spend some time with your new friend. In case of a parrot you will have a lot of work like cleaning the cage because parrots can be very messy. They require also a lot of mixed food like vegetables, seeds, fruit, pellets and nuts and it is important to cook for them daily if you want to keep your parrot healthy.
When considering getting a pet, it's a good idea to compare all the needs of the different pets, search enough information about them and be sure you have time enough for them and you will find the perfect pet which fits you.

Nice Job :)
It is very sad when people discover "after the fact" that either their new pet isn't for them, they can't afford it, or that personalities clash. Being a responsible pet owner is to be sure you've thought of all the possibilities beforehand. GREAT article!!!
Excellent ideas~!
Great tips. Pets mean a balance between rewards and responsibility.
Great article! You covered all the bases on this one!
Super tips here!
Budget is definitely key... today especially. I see a lot of pets on Craigslist because their owners say they can't afford to keep them any more. So sad :(
Very sound advice.
