What to Consider When Hiring a Private Investigator

Allen Bell
There are many reasons to hire a private investigator from investigating possible infidelity in a spouse to locating a missing person. However, do you know what you should look for in terms of qualifications for a good private investigator?

Qualifications and experience can vary in private investigators. There are many ways to go about locating a P.I. You can have a friend refer one to you or you can contact the licensing organization in your state and obtain names of private investigators in your area.

Qualifications to look for:

  • Find out what the licensing requirements are in your state for investigators. You should call the licensing department instead of searching online. Sometimes online databases are not up to date.
  • Ask the licensing bureau if there are any complaints against the private investigator you are considering.
  • Does the investigator have a college degree? Although it is not required, it certainly is a plus.
  • How many years experience does the private investigator have? How much experience does he/she have in the particular area you need?
  • Will anyone besides the investigator you are considering be working on your case (assistants, other investigators, etc)?
  • Does the private investigator have any references from people who he/she has worked for in cases relevant to yours?
Things to Consider:
  • Make sure you feel comfortable with the investigator you select. If you do not have full confidence in him/her, you need to pick another one.
  • Make sure you give the P.I. all the information you have that is relevant to your case.
  • Be certain that the P.I. you hire has a good working relationship with the local law enforcement. Having a good relationship with them can make the investigation go easier.
  • Be completely honest with the investigator. If they are good at what they do, they will be able to tell if you are not being honest.
The decision in hiring a private investigator should not be taken lightly. Keep in mind that the P.I. is in business to work for you and represent your interests.
