What to Consider If You Get an Overseas Job Offer

JOEY S
These days more people are being offered employment overseas. This is usually an exciting time as you are going to a new country that has a different culture. Also, the new country will have different attractions. It is the attraction of the unknown that excites people. It is an opportunity to gain more experience in your chosen profession, which will be put to good use once you return to your country in a few years time. Finally, most of the overseas job offers pay well which will go a long way in setting you and your family financially for life.

However there are things you must consider carefully before you accept the job offer.

You need to make sure that the job you are offered is exactly what was discussed in the interview. For example you need to make sure the tasks you will be performing fits your job description. Also make sure you know exactly what benefits you will be receiving. If you will be getting some form of a living away from home allowance to cover for example, the rent of the house you will be living in make sure it is in writing and signed by the prospective employer and yourself. Also do a research on the company to make sure it has a good reputation. You don't want to discover the problems after you have moved yourself and your family overseas as it will be a costly mistake.

Another thing you need to make sure, especially if you are from a close knit family, is will you be homesick because you will miss your family? Maybe you need to put a clause in your employment contract that you will be allowed to visit your family back home once or twice a year and if they can pay for some of the travel costs. You may also want to avoid countries that are politically unstable or which are subject to natural disasters as you don't want to put your and your family's life at risk.

If you are taking your family with you, make sure your place of residence is near shops, school if you have children and other infrastructures. Also ideally, your place of work needs to be near your place of residence

If you take all these factors into consideration, then the overseas job offer will be well worthwhile in terms of finance, gaining experience and of course experiencing a new culture which you and your family will remember for the rest of your lives.
