What Could Have Been

I haven't been keeping up with my reviews as I did in the past for many reasons. On one hand, it just wasn't fun this year. And work kept me busy, as well. And in all honesty, I just didn't feel like this team was going to do very much worth writing about. With Friday's game, I was proven correct. So here's my take on Friday and the rest of the regular season.

Texas/Texas A&M

Gasoline costs around $3.00 a gallon right now. Do you realize how much The University Of Texas could have saved, had we just decided not to make the trip to the Heaven's Gate of the college world? The results would have been much less embarrassing.

What a piss poor game. And the blame can be spread like butter on a piece of Texas toast.

Colt McCoy will go into our bowl game with a chance to set another Longhorn record. For interceptions. He will enter that game with 18 and a chance to tie, or surpass, Todd Dodge's record of 19. Considering the way Dodge left UT and has been treated since, I'm guessing Todd's gonna be glued to his TV set that night, popcorn in hand.

It's hard to find a place to start for the A&M game, there's so many bad points.

Larry Mac Duff was hired to bring the "Desert Swarm" to Texas. Somebody in College Station must have had a really big can of Raid, because all our defensive players looked like dead cockroaches out there. Missed tackles were the soup of the day and nobody stood out, except for umm,... well, nobody.

And whoever decided to stay with our initial gameplan should be fired. Yeah, like that's gonna happen. But gameplan or not, it's up to the players to execute, or be executed. And we had quite a few Louis XVIs out there.

Obviously some of this will hang on Colt. He did not make plays when he needed to. He finished the game 17-32, for barely 200 yds., and his inability to throw the long ball was on display once again. Time for new blood at QB.

Jamaal did nothing, as well. 17 carries for 92 yards. *yawn*

Our receivers looked like they were handling a steaming dish of cornbread dressing, as they dropped balls like Paris Hilton drops boyfriends, or Britney drops off her kids, or Lindsay drops the the face of the Earth (ok, the last one was wishful thinking).

All in all, this game was one that should not be forgotten. And I mean that in the sense that this should never, EVER, happen again. Considering all the money that has been pumped into this program, Dodds and Brown better make some sweeping changes, come next year.

The Year That Was

Where to start? I'll start with two words. DeLoss Dodds. Mr. Dodds, it's time to put your foot down. I realize that someone from Kansas isn't used to football success, but at some point, something must be done. Crowing about swimming national championships ain't gonna cut it. This program, while sporting great records, has two Big XII championships and one national championship under your watch. Considering that Bob Stoops has been at Oklahoma since '99, and has four (possibly five, after this year) conference titles, a national title, and three BCS championship game appearances, the disparity is disheartening.

Our beloved Mack Brown has a lot of questions to answer, as well. Franklin D. Roosevelt wrote, "It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something."

I'm thinking of emailing that to coach, tomorrow. Truer words could not be said. The "good old boys" thing has got to stop. Although Greg Davis did recognize his mistakes this year and tried to correct some, his overall performance as an offensive coordinator has been very offensive. Unless John Chiles somehow magically takes over at QB, Davis' system will not work here, anymore.

Duane Akina is a likable enough man. He did decent work with individual players before. This year, we rank 107th in passing defense and 56th in total defense, nationwide. This from a team that just two years ago ranked 8th in passing 'D' and 10th in total 'D'. All while being coached by the same man. Time for Akina to go back to individuals and leave the team to another.

But that other shouldn't be Larry Mac Duff. I can't think of a worse hire, other than Gary Darnell at A&M, than this man. He was to be some kind of NFL guru. Yet his only claim to recent fame was some decent special teams at San Francisco. Not a very good reason to hire someone, now is it? In my opinion, Mac Duff needs to be shown Mac Door. And Mac Quickly.

Yes, we were a young team. Yes, we had many unforeseen injuries. But to play as we did, against teams like Arkansas St. and Central Florida, and have losses, like we did to Kansas St. And A&M, is unacceptable. No chemistry was ever fostered amongst these players.

And that's starts with the man under center. Vince Young was the unquestioned leader of this team. The same cannot be said for McCoy. While he is a tough kid, with the heart of a warrior, he does not have "IT". and "IT" is what it takes to lead a team. Here's to hoping John Chiles, or even Sherrod Harris, has "IT".

And to hoping the Deloss Dodds and Mack Brown finally get "IT".

sorry texas fans but mack is a lot like lloyd carr and phil fulmer. that one natl title was almost a bit flukey and now youll be stuck with him for another ten years.

mack is a good coach but not crafty enough to win all his games or all but one most years and get you to the bcs title game.

it's sad because i like texas but brown is not a great coach and it shows.

at the same time its hard to run a guy out who does it the right way and wins 75-80 % of his games
