What is Cryptozoology?

Greg Seltz
Cryptozoology is the study and recording of mythical creatures that compile modern day folklore. Known examples include Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster, Chupacabra, and many, many more. Though we are all familiar with the tales, sightings, and false discoveries of such mythical animals; we have yet to reveal the credence affiliated with such....or have we?

Apparently, the credibility of such rumors proved accurate in 1976, as the first megamouth shark was discovered off the coast of Hawaii. Though this prehistoric animal is a little less mysterious in nature, it too remained hidden until a few decades ago. The findings offer the possibility that although something is rarely seen by the human eye, does not entail that it does not exist. Another trace of evidence lies behind the secret of the Minnesota Iceman. The Iceman was owned and displayed as a carnival attraction. Upon inspection by Canadian customs, word was released that such a creature existed. Though the displayed Iceman was merely a replica, the owner purported to have the original in possession as well. Two cryptozoologists examined the evidence and claimed it a genuine, new species with neanderthal attributes. Whether or not the creature-like-man is indeed factual will remain unknown, as the object disappeared once the FBI was dispatched to investigate. Though these examples are not as mythical as Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster, they too, were once a mystery.

Hundreds of these creatures remain a mystery today; is it possible that a small percentage of them may actually exist. Apparently, it is. The question remains how they have existed alongside humans for so long without the discovery of actual proof. Though Bigfoot has been sighted for the past one hundred years, why have we yet failed to acquire proof of existence in the form of bones, etc. Instead, we recover acclaimed sightings, possible footprints, and false discoveries and hoaxes. Each occasion has manipulated us to believe their existence, yet prove to be something entirely different. A Chupacabra was reportedly found dead; however, the remains identified a coyote with mange. Is it possible that our eyes have simply misled us to believe in fables and tall-tales? I guess only time will tell....in the meantime, keep your eyes open.
