The sign up meeting will allow you to meet the other children who are involved with the "pack" that your child will be joining. It also explains in detail exactly what the Cub Scouts of America is about, what you can expect out of the Cub Scouts for your child, and what your responsibilities as a parent will be.
During this meeting you will have the opportunity to volunteer for one of the many leadership positions available, which would allow you some level of control in the organization, which your child will be a part of. The children will enjoy activities and games as a group while the adults go over this part of the Cub Scouts. They will explain to you the various activities and outings, which have already been planned for your den, and what to expect the coming year.
One of the things sure to be on the agenda is a family camping trip. These trips will allow you and your child to enjoy the experience of camping, not only with each other, but also with the group as a whole. This allows even the most inexperienced camping family to go and enjoy themselves, since there will be more experienced campers in your den to help you along the way. There are many camping areas with special rates for scouts and their families, which make these camping trips fun and affordable for everyone.
Another thing that will be brought up during your sign up meeting is a community service project. These projects vary widely from den to den, but one such project may be a canned food drive for a local shelter or charity organization. The opportunity to participate in such a project can teach your child that the world truly does expand beyond them.
It can also teach them how good it can make them feel to do something that benefits their community, even though it may not directly benefit them. While we usually do a great job educating our children, often times the citizenship aspect of education is overlooked. That is why it is so exciting to find an organization like Cub Scouts that offers you a concrete way of helping your child develop his citizenship skills, and learn about how to give back to his community.
The Cub Scouts also allows your child to work toward earning badges. While, as adults, these badges may seem silly to us. Remember, these badges are the beginning steps to setting goals. By teaching them to work toward earning badges for works completed, the cub scouts is actually teaching our children about setting goals and working towards them in a fun efficient manner. Support your child in his endeavors to earn his badges, and watch him grow as an individual.
The Cub Scouts offers a fun exciting way for our boys to grow and learn in many areas. They also offer the opportunity for family support and encouragement while they do so through many family-oriented activities throughout the year. Joining the cub scouts can be a very enriching activity for not only your son, but for the family as a whole, and they offer great lessons on how to set goals, how to be a good citizen, and most importantly how to have fun for every child that joins.
