What Cyberschool is Really Like: From a Cyberschooling Mom

Heather Shockney

With the state of the current public school system you may be looking for an alternative educational platform for your child. One of the options you have is cyber-schooling. I choose this option for my daughter and I'm going to share with the you the truth on cyber-school. I am hoping this will make your choice easier when looking at other educational means.

Many parents are under the assumption that their child will be able to do cyber-school all on their own. This is one of the biggest misconceptions about cyber-schooling. You will need to be on top of your child's progress to make sure they are completing the necessary work. If your child is younger you will be like their teacher. You will go over each subject with your child and teach them just as a teacher in a regular brick and mortar schools would do. Let's face it these are kids we are talking about. Remember when you were a child. Would you just sit down and do your work if no one was around to hold you accountable?

When you choose to cyber-school your child there is an adjustment period. You are taking on the role of their teacher. This can be difficult. There has to be clear boundaries established right from the beginning. Your child has to understand what is expected from them. It has to be made clear that just because you are their parent does not mean they can get away with not doing their assignments.

While cyber-school allows you the ability to have some flexibility to your day, there still has to be structure. If you child likes to sleep longer in the mornings they can do so as long as they are working later in the day to complete their work. Cyber-school is great for children with special needs. They often have lots of appointments for the doctor and therapies. Cyber-school allows you to take work with you, or work a little later if needed. That being said there still needs to be a daily schedule. Sure things come up, but there needs to a plan each day to make sure your child is progressing with their work. Your child will be expected to make a certain amount of progress each month. If they get behind it can be extremely hard to get caught up.

Some cyber-schools have online classes the students are expected to attend. You will need to see that your child is logging into those classes. If the classes are scheduled at an inconvenient time talk to the teacher and see if they have another class-time. My daughter's cyber-school offers classes in the mornings and afternoons. This works out great for days he has appointments. Many of the classes are also recorded. They can be viewed later if your child misses a class.

Cyber-school has been a great option for our family. This is our third year. My daughter is doing better than I could of ever imagined in this setting. When I started cyber-schooling my daughter I did not have any idea what it would be like. We quickly got into a daily routine and as my daughter is getting older she is able to do a little more work on her own. I still have to oversee she is doing her work and making the expected progress. As long as you are willing to put in the effort, cyber-school can be a great option for your child's education.
