According to the Fiqh Council of North America, the date has now been determined.
Ramadan 2011 will start in North America on August 1 of this year as the FCNA recently posted on the site OnIslam.net.
That means that Muslims will begin fasting from sun-up to sun-down on this date according to astrological calculations made by the group. They also abstain from having any sort of drink, smoking, or sex during the holy month.
In addition, the holiday marking the end of Ramadan, Eid-al-Fitr, will be on Tuesday, August 30 according to the website.
In North America and specifically in America there has been a concerted effort to include more non-Muslims in Ramadan activities such as the iftar (fast-breaking) dinners. Mayors of cities with large Muslim populations have begun hosting iftar dinners and interfaith groups have begun meeting for them as well in order to foster more understanding.
The White House also has a long-standing tradition of hosting iftars dinners as well.
The dinners are a way to meet with family and reflect on the day while breaking fast and meeting together.
An emphasis on solidarity with the poor is a strong part of the holy month as well as people who fast are given a first-hand feeling of what it's like to not have enough to eat.
This year's Ramadan is expected to begin soon and preparations are already underway for the holy month in North America as the day for Ramadan 2011 has been determined.
