This concept, no longer holds true. There are many professional artists who are now recreating art of a primitive nature, characterized by simplicity and often crudeness.
Reminiscent of an earlier time, a primitive folk artist will often reproduce a style that is simple, sometimes even childlike. It is an art form for the common folk.
Pieces are most often displayed along side actual antiques, allowing the owner the pleasure of a look with only a fraction of the price.
An example would be a reproduction shoofly food cover. One can be made for around $10 or purchased from a Primitive artist for under $30. An authentic antique one might cost $100 or more.
Primitive Folk Art spans the entire art community. You can find everything from furniture to small decor items. One popular item is bowl fillers. They are small simple adornments made to do as the name applies... fill bowls. If there is a hanger added to them, they become 'ornies', taken from the word ornaments.
Dolls are be made to appear very old, simplistic, dirty, worn, and well loved. Annies are a favorite of many.
Wood items are also very well received. Many of them are made from reclaimed barn wood or fence boards. When new wood is used, it is distressed and aged to appear as if it was found out back in a century old barn.
There are a few themes that you will find throughout the Primitive Folk Art world. Some of these are sheep, pineapples, willow trees, salt box houses, historical figures such as Abe Lincoln or George Washington, crows, stars and angels. Recently I've also notice a trend toward mice and vintage reproduction pantry labels.
Even as the trends ebb and flow, one thing remains consistent. The motto of a primitive lifestyle is Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, or Do without.
