What Are Diabetes' Effects on Your Skin?

Chris Morris
Once you become diagnosed with diabetes, it is imperative that you find out about diabetes' effects on your body. It can cause major problems with your skin. One of the main effects of diabetes is a higher glucose level in your body. This is caused by the reduced insulin in the body. Insulin is required to break down the glucose and allow it to be absorbed by the body. Your cells then use the glucose as fuel for the body. When you don't have enough insulin, your body starts shutting down because of the lack of fuel provided to it.

With higher glucose levels, you may tend to have dry skin and your body loses much of its ability to fight off harmful bacteria. Both of these issues can increase the chance of your body catching an infection. If you are suffering from this, then it is very important to keep your skin clean and dry. You should also avoid taking very hot baths and showers, as well as bubble baths. The hot water and the minerals in it can be very harsh on your skin. One of the best things that you can do to help your skin is to avoid using hard water when bathing.

Getting a soft water system will help out tremendously with this. I have used softened water for showers before, and can guarantee that it is much better on your skin than the harder public water. It helps keep your skin soft and smooth, even during the winter months. You can use moisturizing soaps and lotions to help keep your skin from getting so dry. It is vital that you keep your skin moisturized and prevent chapping which can open your skin, allowing infection to set in. When drying your skin, make sure you blot your skin dry, rather than rubbing it. By blotting, it leaves a little bit of water on the skin, which can help provide a little extra moisture to your skin as well. It will also help to keep a humidifier around in your home. This should help keep your skin from getting so dry as well.

If you happen to cut yourself, then make sure that you clean it very well with soap and water. You should avoid using antiseptics, alcohol, and iodine because they can be too hard on your body. Make sure that you consult your doctor before using anything else in order to make sure that it won't be harmful.

Dry skin is one of diabetes' effects that can be unobvious to most people. If you suffer from chronic dry skin, then it is recommended that you seek professional guidance and get checked for diabetes.
