What Did I Do with My Bachelor's in Communication?

Expectations Vs. Reality

Robenson Louis
I earned bachelors' degree in Law and Communication in my native country, Haiti. After studying communication in that country, I decided to work as a journalist. I did so for about ten years. Everything has changed when I came to the United States in 2003. I had to face the reality. At first, I knew I would be able to continue with my study in Law and Communication. It was not that simple because I had to deal with credential evaluation, language barrier, and uncertainty.

1. Dealing with credential evaluation's matter

Because my course work was completed at institutions in a country other then the United States, a foreign transcript evaluation was needed for college or university admission in the U.S. It took me time to collect copies of my records. Then I made the first step by requesting a course-by-course foreign transcript evaluation. Unfortunately, the credits I earned were insufficient for the program I planed to attend.

2. Overcoming language barrier

As a newcomer, language barrier was a major problem. My country's official languages are French and Creole. I could barely communicate in English. It took me about six month to understand a little from what English speaking folks were saying when I spoke to them. Hence, it was necessary to overcome this barrier by attending ESL classes.

3. Facing uncertainty

I have been told in 2004 that I needed at least six years to fulfill my goals. At that time, I was unable to even go to ESL classes. Thus, I decided to study Legal Assistant. I completed this program in about two years. However, it was difficult to get hired as a legal assistant in my hometown, for I was inexperienced.

5. So what did I do with my college degrees?

Economically speaking, I can say that I did nothing with my college degrees. However, I am using them for souls' winning purpose. Last summer I wrote and published a wonderful book on proclaiming the gospel by using spiritual and communication approaches. I wrote and am about to publish a second book about Samson. I created numerous Christians' blogs to reach the lost, study with the saved, and proclaim the Good News. Last year, more than 2,000 people visited my webpage, and thousands pages have been viewed.

6. Here my philosophy

If I can lead only one soul to Jesus to be saved, even though my college degree seems to be useless, I'll accomplish an extraordinary work. Therefore, my rewards will be greater than any amount of money my diplomas could ever generate.
