What Did I Do with My Degree from the University of Dayton?

Lisa Carey
The first question is which one? My college journey was long and complicated. I began with an Associate Degree in Legal Assisting, then on to a Bachelor of Arts in English, with minors in Creative Writing and E-11 certification at the University of Dayton.

Have I used my degrees? Absolutely! First I was working in a law office as a paralegal for many years. I went on to complete my Bachelor's degree and wanted to be in the journalism program, but there wasn't one offered. This turned out to be a good thing, because having a degree in English is actually much more versatile and useful, given my goals and ambitions.

I have always enjoyed writing, whether it was legal memos or children's stories. English was my favorite class in high school. I laughingly joke, "What other program could I get a degree in for doing what I love, reading and writing stories?"

What have I done with my degrees since graduation? I have been a substitute teacher for both public and private schools. I have taught in a preschool. I have been a program administrator and admission counselor in a university. Where does English come into "play" in these careers? Everywhere! The skills I learned in the English program taught me how to write clear and concise content, whether in a story or a business letter. The skills learned there about words, phrases, content and organization can be used in any career choice, not just as a writer, reporter or journalist.

But best of all I have finally been able to able to do the one thing I wanted to do, write. Three years ago I embarked on my journey as a writer both for print and web writing and I have never been happier. By getting a degree in English, in addition to my other degree and educational experience in education, law and communication (my Master's program) I am able to use all the things I learned whether it is writing content for a small business website or writing an article on identity theft. The experience and education in both English and Education gives me opportunities to create lesson plans for preschools, homeschoolers and my own children to benefit from. This experience and education has led me to important interviews with parenting experts and the ability to pursue opportunities to learn and share information about parenting and saving the environment. With a degree in English I am able to share those experiences with others and hope that they too can learn and grow from them.

Best of all, my degrees fit; me, my lifestyle, my goals and my interest. The most important thing I learned when getting and using my degree is to do what I love (See Butcher Baker Candlestick Maker, What is the best job I have every had?)

So, what will you do with your degree?

I have to admit I used mine a little but not as much as I should have. I started out majoring in business and then minored in marketing (advertising not sales). I managed a couple a restaurant when I was younger, but ended up doing secretarial work for the long haul. Just recently though I did a freelance job where I had the opportunity to use my writing skills and my marketing education by helping to create advertising for a local business it was a lot of fun. I do run my own internet home business but I don't know how much my degree actually helps me with that. In High School English and Music were my favorite subjects as well, and I was also on the Newspaper staff and the speach and debate teams.

oh my god, I didn't mean to say that, I was listening to the tv which just happened to say embarrassing when I meant very interesting. You are inspiring, an english degree always lends will for writing. I got my degree (masters) in psychology and now I am disabled and I am using my psychology degree to write as well as you already know. I am so embarrassed writing the word I heard on tv
