What Are the Differences Between Tootsie Fruit Rolls and Tootsie Frooties?

Bridget Ilene Delaney
When I was young, I can remember how I always wanted to catch a Tootsie Frooties at any parade. These were always my favorite candies thrown at the parades. I loved the fruit flavored Tootsie Rolls. However, as I looked for them in stores when I got older, I never found them.

There were some fruit flavored Tootsie rolls at a bank one time and they told us that they bought the from Wal*Mart. I was happy that we (my family and I) could easily find these fruit flavored Tootsie rolls again. However, these were not called Frooties. They were called Tootsie Fruit Rolls.

I remembered not liking the vanilla, but my sister loved them. The lemon, lime, and orange, I loved. However, it seemed like some of the flavors were missing. Where were the grape, green apple, and blue raspberry ones?

At the 2011 Children's Mardi Gras parade and Krewe de Omega parade in Lake Charles, I was given a candy by one of the ladies catching things since I was sitting back and enjoying the parade. One of the candies she handed me was a Frootie! It was a strawberry lemonade Frootie. Yet, this seemed smaller than I remember. I saved it and put it into my wallet to bring home.

When I got home, I mentioned that maybe Frooties were smaller than the Tootsie Fruit Rolls. So is this the only difference between Tootsie Frooties and Tootsie Fruit Rolls?

It turns out there are many differences between the candies!

Of course, both Tootsie Fruit Rolls and Tootsie Fruites are the same type of candies. They are chewy flavored candies.

Tootsie Fruit Rolls are the size of the small Tootsie Rolls, known is Midgees. They come in five flavors. These are vanilla, orange, lime, lemon, and cherry. Tootsie Rolls started as penny candies, but they are not penny candies today. It seems that the most common price is $3.00 for a bag of 44, which means the candies cost about seven cents each.

Tootsie Frooties come in nine flavors. These are strawberry lemonade, cran-blueberry, blue raspberry, fruit punch, green apple, grape, strawberry, watermelon, and root beer. It would seem that these smaller candies could still cost a penny. However, at the common price of $7.20 for 360 pieces, the candies cost about two cents each.

Retailers need to make a profit, so the price of these candies, as individual pieces would probably be ten cents and five cents respectively.

To recap, Tootsie Frooties are smaller than Tootsie Fruit Rolls. Tootsie Frooties come in seven flavors while Tootsie Fruit Rolls come in five flavors, none of which are shared between the two.
