What Do You Do with a Poinsettia after Christmas?

Donna Daniels
If you're like me you have a poinsettia left over from your Christmas. I love my poinsettia but now that Christmas is over what should I do with the poinsettia? It is still a lovely plant that deserves better then a garbage burial. I have seen some of the less fortunate poinsettias from Christmas sitting at the curb of some people's houses waiting to be picked up by the garbage man. I got lucky this year and now I have two of those beautiful Christmas plants sitting in my living room. My poinsettias are still very lovely and the red flowers are gorgeous. Maybe if I wait long enough they will stay nice and red till Valentines Day.

What do you do with a Christmas poinsettia after Christmas? Some people live in a disposable world and just throw their Christmas poinsettia out. I think they have forgotten that a poinsettia is a living thing. Some people let them dry up till they die and then they throw them out.

Some poinsettia's stay in their loving homes till they lose their lovely red leaves and then they grow new green leaves. If taken care of they can still be around for next Christmas except they stay green.

Some poinsettia are planted outside in the summer in a garden. Then before it gets cold outside the poinsettia are replanted in a pot and brought back in the house for the winter. Those are lucky poinsettias.

My friend showed me a poinsettia she had from last Christmas. She let it stay outside during the summer in the pot that it came in. She made sure she watered it often so it wouldn't dry out outside. When it started to get cold out this fall she brought the poinsettia back into the house. She put the poinsettia in a closet for six weeks and watered it on occasion while it was in the closet. Then just before Christmas she brought the poinsettia back out and it had a small red flower on it. This poinsettia didn't have a big red flower on it. All it had was one tiny red flower on just one of it's four stems. But the poinsettia was very special because my friend had made that red flower herself.

This year I am going to take both of my poinsettias and put them outside over the summer. Then when it gets cold out I am going to try to put them in a closet for six weeks and see what I get. If I get a red flower, no matter how big it is, I will think it is very special because I made it myself. With the help of the poinsettia
