What Documents Do I Need to Get an Auto Insurance Quote?

Steve Thompson

Every time I sit down at the computer to obtain an auto insurance quote online, I'm always surprised anew by the information required. Never mind that I've gone through this same process dozens of times in the past; I always wind up running around the house, trying to collect the documents and information the insurance company wants.

A better method, obviously, is to write down a list of documents you need to get an auto insurance quote, then collect them before you start the process of requesting a quote. It's merely inconvenient when you're handling it online, but if you visit an agent in person or have a customer service representative on the phone, those extra minutes you spend frantically looking for documents become a real burden.

Current Insurance Documents

Most of the time, an auto insurance quote request will require you to tell the insurance company how long you've been insured with your current carrier. This allows them to verify that you've maintained continual coverage because, if you haven't, they will likely increase your premium. They want to verify your continued financial responsibility.

Your insurance documents have other important information, as well, such as your car's vehicle identification number (VIN) and the year, make, and model. All of this information is necessary when you request an auto insurance quote.

Driver License

Car insurance companies check your driving history before they offer an auto insurance quote. Consequently, you will need to provide them with your driver license number, so keep that handy while you fill out the form.

In some cases, you might need to provide a copy of your driver license or show it to your agent. This verifies that you are a licensed driver, which some car insurance companies want to see.

Social Security Card

Unless you have the number memorized, dig up your social security card. To obtain an auto insurance quote, the company will first want to check your credit report. If you have poor credit history, this indicates to the insurer that you are not responsible when paying bills and managing other financial matters. Your premium might increase because of it.

Checkbook

These days, many car insurance companies can process payments electronically, via e-check or credit card. Nevertheless, they need the information to process those payments.

Bring your checkbook, credit card, or bank statement with you when you apply for an auto insurance quote. This way you don't have to go back to the web site or to the agent's office in order to supply that information.

Applying for an auto insurance quote is not a complicated process, but having the necessary documents handy will prevent confusion and irritation once you begin. If you aren't sure what documents you will need, contact an agent first to request that information.
