What Does Baby Need?

Baby Registry Basics

If you are having your first child, you probably have no idea what to get for the baby or how much you are going to have to spend. My boyfriend and I are expecting our first child later on this summer, and we were lost on exactly what we needed. Thankfully, help is available for new parents. I have compiled a list of items that every baby will need and listed some of the options for parents on a budget. Parents with tons of money or tons of support can probably get every single baby gadget out there, but for parents with a modest baby budget, here are some ideas to get you through the first few months.

Bed

Baby has got to have a place to sleep. This doesn't mean you need to spend $350.00 on a crib and mattress just yet. There are several less expensive options that allow baby a safe and comfortable night's sleep.

1. Close and Secure Sleeper - This is about a $40.00 investment that protects the baby while he is sleeping with you and your partner in your king, queen, or full size bed. Baby sleeps on his back and there is a barrier on either side to remind parents that the little one is there.

2.Moses Basket - A Moses Basket is just what it sounds like and basket for your baby to sleep in, much like the one Moses's mother placed him in on the Nile to save him. You can purchase these baskets online or at stores like "Babies R Us."

3. Bassinet - Bassinets can be purchased for as low as $50.00 (even less on sale). They are a great place for baby to sleep for the first six months or so. They are usually mobile and often come with features like a rocking mechanism or the ability to play soft music.

4. Play yards - While play yards are generally meant for play, they have many functions. Most play yards can serve as Bassinets, changing tables, and ultimately be converted to the age old play pen. While they cost anywhere from $115.00 to $190.00, the multifunctional nature of the play yard saves parents money in the end.

5. Cribs - The traditional crib is traditional for a reason--it is a great place for baby to sleep. Ranging from $100.00 (in places like Big Lots) to $300.00, a new parent cannot go wrong with a traditional crib. Be careful in purchasing some cribs with drop down sides though because there have been some recalls. However, the traditional crib that stays in place should do fine for your little one for the first year or so.

6. Convertible cribs - Convertible cribs are a step up from the traditional crib in that these cribs can transform from crib, to toddler bed, to day bed, to full size bed in about four steps. The costs for these cribs start at around $250.00, but they are definitely worth the price considering that you have a bed frame for at least 5 or 10 years of your little ones life. While you may have to purchase new mattresses, bedding, and a few add-ons for the toddler stage, you will save lots of cash in the long run.

Remember that no matter which sleep option you choose for baby, you need to consider all the accessories required for baby's bed like sheets, blankets, mattresses, and mattress covers just to name a few. Burlington Coat Factor provides a very helpful checklist for parents who register there that reminds you of some of the bedding necessities that are easy to overlook once you have purchased the bed.

Board

Baby has to eat, and during the first 6 to 12 months, baby's diet is pretty basic. You have two options for feeding baby.

1. Breastfeeding - Breastfeeding is the cheapest option for parents on a budget. You do not have to buy breast milk. You may opt not to buy bottles depending on whether mom can stay home with baby or has a flexible schedule that allows for feedings every 2 - 3 hours during the day. There are some requirements that the breastfeeding mom will need to purchase however.

a. Breast pump- If you cannot be with baby 24/7, you will need a breast pump to preserve milk for baby when you are away. The prices on breast pumps range from $20.00 (manual single breast pump) to $300.00 (electronic double breast pump).

b. Nursing pillow - A nursing pillow is a great help especially during those midnight feedings.

c. Other essentials include nursing pads, nipple cream, nursing cover-up (for public feedings), and baby bottles to name a few.

2. Formula - You have to choose a formula for baby. You will need bottles and nipples for formula feedings.

You will also need bottle cleaning supplies (bottle brush and bottle sterilizer) whether you breastfeed or bottle feed. And don't forget bibs, bibs, and more bibs. You may also consider investing in a dishwasher caddy, smaller and larger bottles, and for later: bowls, cups, spoons.

Bath

Baby has to bathe. You'll want to be sure to have the basic essentials for baby bath time. Baby needs lotion, body wash/soap, towels (hooded), washcloths, shampoo, and other toiletries. Just remember whatever you need for personal grooming, baby needs as well. You may decide to purchase a baby bathtub or let baby bathe with you. Just remember baby will need softer and gentler cloths, towels, shampoos, and soaps in the early stages of her life. Also, remember grooming essentials like combs, brushes, and nail clippers.

Wardrobe

For the first few weeks, baby needs a few outfits to get him through. The layette is a list of essential items for baby and includes booties/socks, mittens (so baby will not scratch himself), undershirts, nightgowns, diapers, basic body suits, cotton cap, drool bibs, and burp pads.

In addition to baby's layette, Baby will need 4 or 5 2-piece sets, coveralls (4 -5), a take-me home set, hats/bonnets (2), a sweater set, a cardigan, and feet pajamas. Most of these items can be purchased in any number of stores from Roses to Sears, Carters to Macy's, and even consignment shops. Baby can be fashionable and comfortable without breaking your bank account.

Play
Teethers, activity blanket, swing, stationary exerciser/walker, jumper, crib toys, bouncer seat, and developmental toys are a few starters for baby's activity and play. Times have changed and you may find yourself overwhelmed with the numerous items for baby's activity. Remember that traditional items like books, music, and a good game of peek-a-boo are still favorites among babies everywhere. Many toys and activity items can be purchased for lots less in consignment shops, at yard sales, or on craig's list.

Transport
You have got to take baby places.

Car seat - You will need an approved infant car seat to get baby home from the hospital. A convertible car seat is helpful if you want to save a buck or two.

Stroller - If you decide to be a push-parent, you will need a stroller. Many infant car seats may also serve as strollers and baby carriers. You can save money and get three items in one if you pick the right seat.

Baby carrier/sling - If you decide to be a marsupial parent, you will want a really good baby carrier that is sturdy and safe for baby. Baby slings are safe, but there are suffocation hazards for young babies or if they baby is not positioned correctly in the carrier so be sure to get a tutorial on the proper positioning of you and baby when using a sling.

Baby's arrival means big changes for you and your spouse, partner, or significant other, but you can be prepared if you take the time to get the essentials. You do not have to break your bank to bring baby in with all her needs.
