What Does the Bible Say About Adultery

Adultery is Spoken of in the Bible

There are many verses that speak on adultery being sin in the Bible. The words "shall not" is in most of the scriptures. The meaning of adultery is voluntary intercourse between a married person and someone other than his or her lawful spouse. Another way to define adultery is voluntary violation of the marriage bed.
In some states adultery is a crime also the bible says "the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death." Leviticus 20:10, In Proverbs 6:32: it speaks that "whoso commit adultery with a woman lack understanding, he that doeth it destroy his own soul." These Bible verses are speaking on the fleshly nature.

In the bible verse Jeremiah 3:8 adultery is spoken of in the spiritual nature. "I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot." Here God has put Israel away because the people had gone against him. Then joining them to commune and assembled with them is Judah. God not only separated himself from them but did so with a divorce. The meaning of divorce in this case means to total separate, disunion and to cut off.

These next scriptures say how God feels and what he has to say about Israel. "How shall I pardon thee for this? Thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots' houses." Jeremiah 5:7, The Bible also says in Jeremiah 29:23, "Because they have committed villainy in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbors' wives and have spoken lying words in my name which I have not commanded them even I know and am a witness, said the LORD." This is as plain as it gets. The way God is explaining what went on and how he feels it can not be any clearer.

In this verse it says "That they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands, and with their idols have they committed adultery, and have also caused their sons, whom they bare unto me, to pass for them through the fire, to devour them." Ezekiel 23:37, in the scripture they have idols (an image or other material object representing a deity to which religious worship is addressed) they committed adultery. They put these idols before God. Then they were teaching these things to their children which are sin. The children should be taught to have no other Gods before the lord.

The next scripture speaks of old times meaning in the tome of the Old Testament. Matthew 5:27; "Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shall not commit adultery." This one speaks concerning lust meaning pleasure, delight, desire or wish. Of course, this actually means man or woman. Believe it or not there are women that look upon a man the same way. "But I say unto you, that whosoever looks on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." Matthew 5:28,

The last verse speaks on the only way to put away a wife or husband. It says that only for fornication or adultery can they be put away (divorce). If one is put away for another reason causes her or him to commit adultery. Also if the person they marry is divorced commit adultery. "But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, cause her to commit adultery and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced commit adultery." Matthew 5:32,
