What Does the Bible Say About God? Bible Verses on God

Use These Verses to Find Out What the Bible Says About God

Erik Wesley
Most papers, books, and articles tend to focus in on very specific aspects of God, and leave out others. Often, a writer will focus in on what the Old Testament (before Jesus came) or the New Testament (Jesus' arrival and after) say about him.

Here I hope to provide key Bible verses on God starting in the beginning of the Bible and going through the New Testament. Hopefully these Bible verses will be a good reference for someone, and help put things into perspective.

Genesis 1:1 - This verse says that he created everything that exists.

Genesis 2:7-8 - God created people in these Bible verses.

Exodus 3:14 - In this Bible passage, God calls himself the "I AM." The name is called the tetragrammaton, and implies that he exists independently of everything that is created. This name evolved into the name "LORD" in all caps throughout the Bible.

Exodus 6:2-3 - Here God says that He didn't reveal himself as the "I AM" in the beginning, but that he reserved it for a later time. Until that point, he was known as the deity worshiped by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (the forefathers of Israel).

Exodus 15:11 - This is a poem that says he is unlike anyone else, and uses the word holiness or holy, which means "different."

Exodus 20:1-6 - The "I am jealous" verse about God is found in these Bible verses. He says that he is jealous for people to worship only him, because he is the only one who has cared for his people.

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 - Two things are apparent in these Bible verses: there is only one God, and Israel is supposed to love him with all their heart, soul, and strength.

Deuteronomy 32:6 - He is a father to Israel.

1 Chronicles 29:10 - He can become angry, and you should be afraid if he becomes angry at you.

Psalm 19:1-3 - Creation shows his greatness in these Bible verses.

Isaiah 43:3 - He saves his people.

Isaiah 43:15 - He is the creator of people.

Isaiah 48:16 - Two things appear in this Bible verse: he has secrets, and he sent someone else, as well as his Holy Spirit (this is used for the idea of the Trinity, or three in one).

Isaiah 64:8 - He is a father to Israel, and works on his children like a potter molds clay.

Jeremiah 10:10 - He lives forever.

Jeremiah 17:13 - He is a source of life that bubbles over. Those who turn away from him will have a lot of shame to deal with.

Matthew 6:9-10 - God is a father, he is in heaven, and he has a kingdom that he will eventually bring to earth.

Matthew 7:11 - He is a father who takes care of his children. This is said through a question: what kind of father gives terrible or hurtful gifts to his children? He won't either.

Matthew 23:9 - Jesus says God is our father, and he lives in heaven.

Matthew 28:19 - Three Gods are presented here working as one unit: Father, Spirit, and Son.

Mark 1:9-11 - He has a Son, Jesus.

John 4:24 - God is spirit, not flesh.

John 5:26, 32-37 - These Bible verses say that he has life, and he says that he has given that life through his Son, Jesus.

John 10:30, 36 - Jesus and the Father are one. While these Bible verses have sparked much debate throughout the centuries, at the very least it means that the two are intent on the same goal, and that they work together to reach that goal.

John 14:6-13, 16-26 - These Bible verses show Jesus and the Father as one. No one can know the Father unless he knows Jesus. The Holy Spirit will be with those who believe in Jesus as a helper. These Bible verses also show the "three in one" concept.

John 17:1-8 - Jesus and the Father worked together to help people understand who God is, and to give them life that would not end.

Acts 1:7 - God keeps his timelines secret.

Romans 8:14-15 - These Bible verses say that he is a father to all who believe in Jesus.

1 Corinthians 8:6 - There is only one God, who is the Father, and one Lord, who is Jesus.

Galatians 4:6 - God sent his Son, Jesus, so that we could call him Father.

Ephesians 4:6 - This Bible verse shows the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit together as one.

Phillippians 2:6 - Jesus existed as God, but didn't hold on to that pridefully.

Colossians 1:15 - Jesus is the likeness of God.

1 Timothy 1:17 - God exists eternally, is immortal, is not seen by people, and is the only God.

Hebrews 11:6 - Having faith is the only way to please him.

Hebrews 12:9 - He is a father who disciplines his children (us) in a fatherly way.

1 Peter 1:17 - He evaluates the works of people.

1 John 5:7 - Another of the Bible verses that say God is three in one.

THE ENTIRE OLD TESTAMENT IS WRITTEN TO AND OF THE ISRAELITES. IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND IT KNOWLEDGE OF ANCIANT HISTORY AND CIVILIZATION IS HELPFUL, BUT THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL REVEAL WHAT YOU NEED AS THAT NEED ARISES.

Judges 10-13thru judges 11 shows God changes his mind in favor of mercy

God never changed his mind. In fact, if anything the fact that Jesus had to die shows that God DOESN'T change his mind about things like that. Jesus' death sealed the better treaty that allowed everyone, not just Jews, to have peace with God (whenever a treaty was made, it always involved the death of an animal...effectively saying that anyone who broke the treaty would have the same done to them). Jesus even offered up the better terms of the treaty when he gave his speech on the mountaintop in Matthew 5, 6, and 7. This speech mirrors pretty well the blessings and curses of Deuteronomy (which were staples of suzerain-vassal treaties).

So when people chose to do what they wanted rather than what God wanted, they started a war against him. After that, people were enemies of God (see Romans 5:10, 11:28). God then extended a treaty to a few people (the Jews) who would represent him to the rest of the world. The treaty is Deuteronomy. The entire thing is written in suzerain-vassal treaty language. In it are the terms of the treaty. Terms of a treaty are not the same as a manifesto on what he really wants from people. That's why you get a verse that says to handle a poor raped woman in that way. It's not ideal, but in all fairness it is miles ahead of anything she would have gotten from any other culture of the day (sorry ladies...Jesus showed God's love for women much better in the way he handled the woman caught in adultery and in the way he trusted the Marys). You have to remember though that people were at war with God, and in war people die. That also led to Jesus' eventual death. God never changed his min

On the contrary, God created mankind with the capacity to choose right and live up to his standards. The Genesis account of creation says that all he created was good except man and woman, of whom he said it was "very good." Those two had only one "do not" law in the beginning, and one that shouldn't have been hard to follow. Those people didn't follow it, though, and instead said that their desire to do what they want was more important than the guidelines laid out by the one who made them. I had a car like that once...it didn't do what I wanted. I got rid of it.

  • Sure is pick & choose in here.7/17/2009

Of course its not his creations fault if God creates them completely unable to live up to his own standards. Consequently, this gives us even more insight into his mentality. In short, hes a vicious, unreasonable, fickle, malevolent asshole. - Genesis 1 through Revelation 22:20.
