What Does Human Resources Do Today?

Human Resources - Are There Any Humans in Resources?

Hope Gold
There are many points of view on being unemployed. One is, thank god, I hated that job anyway and the other is yeah, but it paid the bills.

Having the good fortune (or misfortune) of being currently unemployed, I've taken to the new job search tools available for looking for employment on-line. Career-builder, Monster, Sologig and the list goes on. All of them claiming to have NEW and EXCITING job postings.

So, I reply and hit submit application now and I eagerly await the automatically generated email thanking me for my response. And, that's about pretty much the end of my dialog with Human Resources.

Being the self-starter that I am, I ferret out the phone number's of the companies I'm applying to and call to verify my resume was received. You would think I was asking for the combination to Gonzalez' secret documents cabinet!

I was actually reprimanded for going to Human Resources to apply for a job in PERSON without an appointment. What does Human Resources do, if not to meet with prospective applicants? No, today, you send in your anonymous on-line application to a dark hole, hoping your resume lands in the right hands. Praying you used all the industry buzz words so that the scanner spits out your qualifications as skills sets they want to pursue.

The best part friends, is now you are giving an assignment as part of your interview. I think this is the lazy man's version of getting free work! Hmmm.....John, any new idea's for that marketing project? Nope - let's put an ad in the paper and get them to give us a sample of their work, then we can golf for the next 6 months.

OK, sorry if I sound a bit bit t ttt er --- maybe not golf for 6 months.

But really, what does Human Resources do. There are recruiters, there are websites and job boards all making Human Resources obsolete. So, then, what is Human Resources doing?

Maybe, Human Resources, when an applicant comes to speak to you about working for your organization, you'll see it as a tool to promote your company. Otherwise, it could be your resume you need to dust off!

I love to learn on a daily basis. I try to learn something new everyday. I try to live by the golden rule - do unto others as you would have done unto you - trust me - it seems to be getting harder everyday,...  View profile

I am a Monster and HotJobs applier after being "resigned" (they said I quit, but was really fired) by my human resource department a month ago. I am not even sure that the jobs on these sites are real. The only responses I get are from temp recruiters or get rich pyramid schemes.

Where have you been? HR doesn't hire or help anyone, esp. the employee. Their job is to get rid of troubled employees, without getting into legal trouble! They protect the company, first and foremost. Have a sexual harassment complaint? They will get rid of you and the one you accused! Wake up!!!!!!!!!!!

This article is stupid and pointless.

Right on target Miss Hope. Especially love the last line: "Maybe, Human Resources, when an applicant comes to speak to you about working for your organization, you'll see it as a tool to promote your company. Otherwise, it could be your resume you need to dust off!"
I wish you the best in your job search...
