Identity theft is the crime of the 21st century. Find out what identity theft can mean to you and your loved ones. You may be an average consumer, but you are also a possible victim.

Today, the vast majority of consumers are familiar with the term identity theft. Films, TV and radio, all media forms, have cast their eyes upon the term. It has become one of the central crimes of the 21st century.

But, what does it mean to you, the average consumer? How can you understand the basic elements of a crime that is so easy to perpetuate?

The following three part explanation will help you understand the basic ways that a thief, simply walks into your shoes.

Your Social Security card - The Social Security card is the closest identification number that Americans have to a national identification number today. Basically, once someone besides yourself obtains that number, they can take on your financial life with very little effort. How? Simply stated, credit card histories, bank accounts, loan applications, and utilities can all become the property of someone new with your Social Security number. Think about how often you hand over that simple number during transactions, online and off, and understanding your vulnerability becomes apparent.

Credit - After understanding the importance of your social security number, it becomes easy to comprehend the credit destruction. Once armed with your credit, the perpetrator has easy access to all purchases, loans, employment, leases, utilities, or anything else that requires your good name. Without your knowledge, the perpetrator will enjoy your lifestyle and ruin your credit. This is especially easy in 2007 when the internet makes gaining access effortless.

Reputation - The person who has worked years to obtain good credit, a good reputation in his community and stellar employment records can have all of this wiped away within days if the wrong person walks away with the correct records. There are reports throughout law enforcement of those who have lost all of these to a well-versed perpetrator. Knowing as much about identity theft and current ways to prevent this crime are imperative for the citizen of the 21st century.

Today, the Internet, and the global economy have made identity theft or internet fraud a crime filled with new and innovative methods of commission. However, law enforcement is working hard every day to meet these means of commission with methods of prevention.
