Romo was signed by the Cowboys in 2003 an undrafted rookie free agent out of Eastern Illinois University. He has stuck around as a back-up quarterback since Quincy Carter was released following allegations of substance abuse and after quarterback Chad Hutchinson was released following the 2003 season. Then Dallas gave Vinny Testaverde a chance, and he could not get the job done. The Cowboys then signed veteran quarterback Drew Bledsoe. The Cowboys have had eight starting quarterback of the Cowboys since the 2000 season. Bledsoe also flaked this season forcing head coach Bill Parcells to give Romo a shot. And now Romo has solved all of the Cowboys quarterback problems and they are even leading their division.
What does Romo's success really say about the Dallas Cowboy Organization? I think it says the organization is blind and stupid. What has Parcells been thinking over the past three years while Romo sat and waited? What have the assistant coaches been thinking over the past three years while Romo sat and waited? What about the scouting department? Has owner/general manager Jerry Jones not attended a practice in the past three years? It looks to me as the Parcells and the rest of the organization have been paying more attention to the cheerleaders than their players. I am sure Romo has improved over the lat three years, but he did not get this good overnight. It appears to me that he was simply overlooked by the Cowboy brass. How could Parcells and his staff have missed this talent for three years? Where have they been during practice? To protect himself, Parcells has said he has been slowly grooming Romo, and refused to put him into an NFL game until he knew he was ready. Sure Tuna, we all believe that one!
Parcells on the other hand has mellowed with age and he is not the coach he used to be. How can he put up with Terrell Owens? I think every NFL fan would agree that 10 years ago Bill Parcells would not have put up with Owens 10 minutes. I am not saying Owens is not a great football player, but he is a selfish player who's problems on and off the field are major distractions to the team. He has always had a troubled career, and this year nothing has changed- first he tries to kill himself and then he is fined 35,000 for spitting on another player. Spitting is as low as a player can get. Former Cowboy Michael Irvin had problems off the field but never on the field. However, unlike Owens, Irvin was not afraid to go across the middle and catch the football. Thats why he will always be remembered in Dallas as the play-maker, not as a gun shy punk like Owens. Parcells lets Owens get away with this and listens to Jerry Jones too much now a days. Jones is a great business man but he is not a football man, he proved this when he let Jimmy Johnson go 10 years ago. The whole organization has been down in the dumps since Johnson left, but they hit a new low when it took them 3 years to discover Tony Romo was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
