What Does the Secretary of State Do?

Obama Might Be Considering Hillary Clinton to Be Secretary of State.

Hillary Clinton may not have won the Democratic nomination, but, that doesn't mean she may not become another important member of the government this year. Sources close to Barack Obama say that Hillary Clinton is being considered for the role of Secretary of State.

Secretary of State? What is the Secretary of State? Well, according to the US constitution, the president selects who he wants to be his Secretary of State. No, Hillary won't be his secretary taking calls and writing letters. There is nothing secretarial about being the Secretary of State. To find out what a Secretary of State does, read on.

If Hillary Clinton becomes the Secretary of State she will be responsible for Obama's main advisor on U.S. foreign policy, be in charge of negotiations of the United States' foreign affairs, will help advise Obama on the appointment of U.S. ambassadors, negotiate, interpret, and if need be terminate treaties and agreements and ensure the protection of the government for the citizens of the US, their property, and the interests of some foreign countries.

Hillary Clinton, as Secretary of State, would also be in charge of immigration laws abroad, supervise the Foreign Services of the United States, and promote the economic intercourse between the U.S.A. and other foreign countries.

You can find out everything that Hillary Clinton would be in charge of if she were Secretary of State at the government website about the Secretary of State.

If Hillary Clinton is selected to be the Secretary of State she will have many duties, mostly concerning foreign policies and politics.

Former Secretaries of State have been Colin Powel from 2001-2005, Madeline Albright from 1997-2001, and current Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

First and foremost Obama has to directly ask Hillary to become Secretary of State. As it stands now, it is mere gossip that he is considering her. Maybe he is throwing the bait out to see her reaction. After he asks her, she must then agree to do it and then there is a process of whether she would even be accepted for the job.

Many speculate whether or not she would even accept the offer. Many also believe, including me, that Hillary Clinton plans to run for president again. Now, mind you, I don't expect her to run in 2012. If she does, I doubt she would run on the Democratic ticket against what would then be the current President.

Right now everything is in pre-speculation. First Obama has to ask her to be his Secretary of State. For now, it is only important to know exactly what it is the Secretary of State actually does. Hillary's foreign policy is not something to brag about, but, much like Obama, she is intelligent enough to learn and could quite possibly be a great Secretary of State.

I used to think that Bush was doing a good job until he pushed through a $830 Billion dollar bailout bill. His presidential years will be marked by a prideful continuing of a blind war and the end of capitalism.

    I wish I felt differently.

But for the record, Obama will be anything BUT better for the US... Can't we just have a complete do-over?

Bush is a Buffoon and doesn't have a clue as to the cituation he has put the American people in, or does he care!

Godly Men don't lie, mislead, deny to start wars. Godly men would uplift and enrich the lives of the people he serves rather pad the pockets of big business. The country was treated like a frat house and now we all are paying for it. Open your eyes and get off the brain washed ideas that Bush was doing GOD's work.

The Secretary of State is supposed to act in the capacity as representative of the President in meetings with the heads of foreign dignitaries overseas. You see, our President was never intended to be a globe trotter, but at his desk during Congress so that he can be present when his signature or veto is necessary on legislation. The Secretary of State, and Ambassadors, actually were intended to be the entities responsible for directly meeting with foreign dignitaries overseas....and the president simply entertaining them while in our nation's capitol. That way his life also was protected from foreign retribution. That is, until the Executive Office began more and more usurping powers, and redelegating authorities so that we have the mess we now have with the levels upon levels of bureaucracy. And Bush, by far in recent history, the worst.
