It probably comes as no surprise that the Border Collie is first on that list and considered the smartest dog breed. The Border Collie is so intelligent that he is legendary and the breed set the standard in many dog competitions. This beautiful dog likes to use his smarts too, so he needs a job, a task or anything to keep him busy. This breed loves to exercise with his master. Number two smartest breed is known for his trainability. That lovable Poodle, whose love for people is as strong as it's desire to never be alone! Next is the German Shepard,Often used in police work or search efforts. He has a very strong protective streak that can make him a wonderful pet if he is properly trained not to be overly aggressive. Forth in line comes the Golden Retriever, one of America's favorites who is very gentle and loving, and the Shetland Sheepdog is right behind, known for his deep concentration. Then is the loving Lab, another American favorite, and the moody, sometimes possessive Papillion.
The Papillion is not only very smart, but also it is affectionate and easy to train. The Papillion is the smallest breed in the top ten. The Rottweiler with it's scary reputation is number 9 on the most intelligent list. They do make good guard dogs but are not so vicious as many believe and are extremely loyal dogs.. Last but not least is the Australian Cattle dog. He will be very protective of his property and his family! He loves being outside watching over things.
All of these breeds need mental stimulation as well as physical work because of their high intelligence level, so don't expect these guys to thrive without a purpose in life. They will do best with training, jobs or tasks, and lots of love.
