What to Do in Durango, Colorado

There is so Much More Than You First Realize

Durango, Colorado, is a jewel nestled in the mountains of Southern Colorado. When you first approach this city from either the West or East it looks like any other mountain town. Not necessarily a destination or a place to spend some time just relaxing and absorbing the slower more laid back mountain life. But turn that corner to head north into town and a whole new world opens up.

Durango was founded in 1881 when the Denver and Rio Grande railroad came through the area bringing supplies for the miners in the surrounding mining camp such as Silverton to the north of Durango. Over the years Durango has grown into a bustling community that boasts year round vacation opportunities.

The beauty of the area of Southwestern Colorado is only enhanced by the variety of activities available. On any given day during the summer you can go hiking, white water rafting, bicycle riding, exploring Ancient Native American ruins, or riding the Durango-Silverton railroad through some breath taking scenery.

For the geology buffs, exploring the local mining history gives you an idea of the more recent history of Durango as well. It will open the door to an incredible world of gems, minerals and "rocks".

During the winter explore a snow covered wonderland filled with skiing, snow shoeing and snowmobiling. Located in the San Jaun mountains there are plenty of opportunities to challenge your skills.

After a day of enjoying the surrounding area come back to Durango to settle in for the evening. Wait settle in? I don't think so. The night life around Durango is filled with Art walks, shops offering a variety of locally produced items and incredible restaurants.

Dining will be an adventure all of its own. There are several restaurants that offer traditional fare. Or you can try the more adventurous flavors of the southwest with a little upscale twist at Francisco's restaurante. The menu offers a wide variety of delicious and tempting options, such as deep fried avocado with tequila shrimp. Or you can enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery and setting sun by sitting on the patio at El Patio and listen to a local live band.

When you are ready to finally settle in for the evening, The Strater is an elegant hotel with a turn of the century Victorian charm that will help you sleep in comfort.

When looking for that destination that has it all and in a beautiful location Durango, Colorado is a sure bet with an exclamation point.
