What Are Ebooks?

What are e-books? E-books are electronic types of texts that are based on hard bound books. These versions can be read at the convenience of the reader's desktop computers or laptop, PDA or other small devices that can be taken and used anywhere. E-books can be in any form of variety of files though they all share the same characteristics. They are transferable, searchable and portable. Electronic media can also include other elements, like audio, video files, links and annotations. They can also be comprised of comments and chat features that permit interaction among their readers online. Some other websites even allow links to outside resources. Some types of e-books are in the HTML formats and some are in software type.

There are different types of e-books with different functions. In most types, the texts are printed electronically in order to raise the accessibility to readers who might be able to access hard bound copies at their university libraries. These electronic books enhanced and balanced the printed book. Although, there are other books that can only be access online, still some are not printable. However, there are other e-books that have more suited content to the functions that digital texts permit rather than the printed texts.

E-books began to reign online in the 1990's, when information technology was booming. It provided cheap production, hassle-free dissemination and readily available storage of electronic books.

The mass consumers, publishers and academes made e-books as their primary source of reading materials for their researches and studies. There are many search engines like Google that feature e-books. Others have established online libraries where in users need to subscribe yearly to gain accessibility. These online libraries are NetLibrary, Open Content Alliance and Questia. They have all the e-books for all subject matters.

E-books also solved the problems of students who cannot afford expensive books that their universities require them to buy. In some schools, with the effort to answer the increasing costs of books, some subjects only make use of e-books, which can be purchased inside the campus with the printed books. Another advantage of getting an e-book is that it is updated annually unlike printed books which take years to be reprinted again.

Since e-books are more convenient today, publishers see the demand in the market. The publishers are now eyeing to be more aggressive in producing e-books rather than printed versions. They are now more willing to put investments on marketing e-books than printing more hard bound books. Publishers are now beginning to create their new market niche in e-books industry since-books are cheaper to produce and cheaper in market. All they have to do is have their own website or just simply advertise at amazon.com or even eBay. On the other hand, writers or authors are having difficulties in selling their books to publishers because of the e-books' increasing demand. Some authors would not want to publish their works knowing that their works will eventually be turned into e-books. It is true! E-books are less expensive and can provide easy access to readers. However, the copyrights and the protection of the intellectual property rights of the authors are at stake.
