What is Education?

Formal and Informal Education

According the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary 6th edition, the word "education" is a process of teaching, training and learning, especially in schools or colleges, to improve knowledge and develop skills. But in my own opinion, the meaning of education is a bit more than the meaning it is been given or attached to it by the dictionary. Education is classified into two categories: formal and informal education.

The formal education is the unique one in which most people are adapted to, which means getting together in a particular place to teach a group of people that are normally called "students". In this type of education most people are thought base on the curriculum of the school authority or setting. This means that the authority of that particular school has a specific guide in which the teachers would teach the student in a particular period of time.

The students in the formal education are given a list of outlines that would be covered in a particular period. The students are not going to do this all by themselves but they would have a guardian that would order the process of learning. The guardian is normally called the teacher or lecturer as the same may be. The teacher or tutor is charged with the responsibility to see that the student clearly understand what they are doing and also to be masters in this area of specialization.

At the end of the period of learning the school authority depending on the school setting an individual finds his or herself would set an examination. The examination is aim at testing the knowledge of the pupil whether they are adequate taught and if the students are serious in learning what they came to school to do. At the end of this examination results would be issued out to the student. The results would determine whether the students have performed adequately or not.

The formal education comes in a progressive form, which means an individual would start from the lower to the higher level of his or her education. An individual benefit greatly from the formal education, because he or she would face challenges from his or her colleagues in schools.

There are various department an individual could engage his or herself in the formal education. All this are aim with the dream of getting to be a doctor, accountant, computer scientist, writer and many more.

The informal education is quite different from the formal education but there are some similarities. One major different between the informal education and the formal education is that an individual in the formal education is given a certificate to prove that he or she has ascertain his or her qualification while the informal education there is no certificate given.

An individual in the informal education gets his or her knowledge from either wisdom, which means inbuilt knowledge, which is otherwise known, has wisdom or through the guardians from parents, friends and many more.

The individual in the informal education is not given a list of outlines that would be covered in a particular period of time. The individual that involves his or herself in the informal education could cover what a student in the Formal education would cover in 4 years in one year. The benefit of the informal education is that it is relatively fast and quicker than the formal education.

The idea that most people have around the world that say education must or should be the teaching of individual in schools is quite wrong. In some exceptional cases people that acquired informal individual comes out successful than those in the formal education.

Education can be acquired in two forms, which means the formal education that is certified or the informal education that does not features any certification. But one good thing about education is that the individual could achieve the two form of education.

Education means enlightenment about your environment and you. Bringing your awareness to what is really going in your domicile and outside. It also goes further in the broadening or scope of the individual's mind and thinking faculty.
