What Else Can You Use Ice Cubes For?

Abby Willow
I have a few ways to use ice cubes, but I didn't know there were so many other options out there. For instance, my sister uses ice cubes to water her plants- since she tends to overwater them, she just places a few ice cubes in her plants in the morning and they melt during the day. This would be a great way to water your hanging plants that are hard to reach- you could just throw the ice cubes in- no watering can required.

I use ice cubes now to get the fat out of soups and gravy- a handful of ice cubes helps the fat coagulate to the ice cubes, allowing you to get out the fat no problem, and have a healthier meal! Stir the ice cubes around and you have the fat rising to the surface for easy scooping out of all that yucky fat!

My mom reheats rice using ice cubes, which makes sense because she also cools down soups and top ramen foods for the younger kiddos with ice cubes. When she has leftover rice in her fridge and she wants it to return to its fluffy state, she tosses in an ice cube or 2 on the top of the rice before it hits the microwave. Perfect rice, that is not soggy at all!

Again, hot foods for young kids can be cooled down with an ice cube, like soup, macaroni and cheese, and noodles. This way, your hungry kids don't have to wait for their food to cool to eat it. My mom and aunt are both known to do this.

Since ice has numbing properties, you can use ice cubes to numb your eyebrows before tweezing, or over your earlobes when you put earrings in. My ears always seem to close up when I don't ear earrings for a while, and using an ice cube to numb them before 're-piercing' them to wear earrings certainly helps. An ice cube also can shrink a zit to a less noticeable size (and Visine takes that red out as well).

My sister gives her young daughter an ice cube to suck on before she gives her nasty cold medicine. Since ice cubes numb taste buds, it makes the medicine less yucky. Just be careful to watch your young ones with ice- they can choke or gag on it left unattended. What also works is crushing over the counter pain pills in sweet frosting to make them easier to take as well.

In the summer, you can give your dog or cat an ice cube to munch on when it's hot out. Some pets don't mind them in their bowl, but my dog just likes to be fed them. She won't eat them in her bowl, but when they melt down, she has nice cold water to drink.

Ice cubes are super handy to have on-hand when you have a glue gun in use for crafts. With blisters bound to happen, an ice cube placed on the burned area can keep the chance of actually getting a blister for your efforts lower than water alone.
