In this day in age grade are as important as ever in college. Many people focus solely on them, and then later regret doing so. From what I have gathered, I have learned that employers are in fact looking for very well rounded students to join their companies. Yes they are still looking for students with a 3.0+ or 3.5+ preferably, but they are also looking for people with people skills, and people who have shown their leadership skills through their involvement during college. Several times I have heard from recruiters that they would take a well rounded 3.5 student before they would take a 4.0 student that had no or little involvement.
Also keep in mind that a potential employer is looking for quality not quantity. Being a member of ten different groups is not near as impressive as being the president of a club and having a ton of responsibility. Search around campus for clubs that interest you. Do not just look for ones that you think will look the best on your resume. There are often clubs that are for specific majors or areas of study. Be sure to check them out. They will not only provide you with a way to make friends and earn skills that will be valuable in the future, but will give you the chance to network. Networking is extremely important in landing that dream job. These clubs will allow you to meet with company representatives, and believe me, if you make a good impression, it will be remembered when it comes time to decide who gets an interview.
Being a leader in a club not only shows potential employers that you are probably a good fit for their company, but also shows dedication, and gives you something to talk about in your interview. Interviewers will definitely want to hear about your leadership experiences. The fact that you have some to talk about will really help you out in your interview. Another good thing to have is volunteer work, such as a mission trip. This again looking great to employers as it really says a lot about your character. It is also another talking point for your interview.
If you haven't taken anything else from this article, just remember to get involved, and strive for quality in those experiences, not quantity. That, along with good grades, should set you up for a job that you would want to have.

Post a CommentI had a professor tell me that when he was looking for his first job, that his employer told him that a degree meant nothing more to him other than the student was capable of being trained. Experience and networking are huge along with education, good article!
