What is storm chasing you may ask? It is simply pursuing awful, severe weather. You may think that storm chasing entails surveying severe weather unfolding from the comfort of your home, but it is a lot different, you have to get out into your vehicle and follow the weather.
As much as storm chasing can be exciting, you just don't decide that storm chasing is the right career or hobby for you. You have to consider what entails storm chasing which are research, determination, hard work and extensive knowledge on the weather. Typically, storm chasers would rely on severe weather alerts, their basic knowledge of weather, and radar images which will guide them u in being at the right place at the opportune moment.
As professional storm chasers rely on research and technology to guide them through to the severe weather, before deciding that it is your career path, you need to ask yourself if you have the capability. Sophisticated devices such as a computer or television and a weather radio in your vehicle are mandatory as they will not only update you on current radar images and severe weather, they will inform you of impending dangers to avoid.
Equally, storm chasers are expected to have the ability to think on their feet and be good at solving problems under pressure. Are you a swift thinker? Can you come up with viable solutions under pressure? Remember that storm chasing has its own dangers. For instance, how would you react when you find yourself trapped while tracking super cells thunderstorms as you try to find a tornado?
It is possible that one can become a storm chaser alone, but one should beware of dangers and risks involved. You can be successful alone, but you can be more successful when you have a partner or several partners to share tasks such as one partner can be the driver, another monitors radio alerts or radar images, and another can be a lookout. Remember, extra set of eyes are always helpful as they may even help lessen your injury risks.
Whether you want to be a professional storm chaser or just doing it for fun, you have to know that there is more to it, such as observing great caution and learning what situations to expect and important actions to take in risky situations, as only then, can you define the success of a storm chaser.
