What is an Entrepreneur?

Kristi Patrice Carter
The technical definition of an entrepreneur is someone who starts a business venture while assuming all the risk for the startup. However, those who are truly entrepreneurs know that there is much more to it than that - and some would swear that an entrepreneurial spirit runs through the vein like blood.
Excitement -

Being an entrepreneur is exciting, because entrepreneurs have one goal - to make money. Most of the time, this is accomplished by the individual finding a market for a product or service that doesn't exist yet. This means that the entrepreneur has absolutely no competition - at least not right off hand. This gives the entrepreneur the ability to make a lot of money. Finding these opportunities is exciting and fun to the entrepreneur.
Funding Opportunities -

Most of the time, an entrepreneur finds his or her own funding - whether that's through a small business loan, a grant or sponsorship. Occasionally an entrepreneur is wealthy enough to personally provide the funding for his or her new venture. Many entrepreneurs have massive networks of acquaintances that they might contact if there is a really great opportunity to make a lot of money but no funding. Several individuals may decide to sponsor the entrepreneur in hopes of making more money down the road.
Skills and Experience -

Anyone can start a business, but an entrepreneur needs to have several different kinds of skills and experience if the business is going to be really successful. Savvy entrepreneurs need to be able to tell whether there is a market for the product or service. If there is no market, there is no money to be made. The entrepreneur must then determine how to best market his or her new venture so that it becomes popular among its market. Along with this, they have to know how to connect with consumers and much more.

Entrepreneurs may experience several failed ventures before they find one that really takes off and becomes successful. However, that is all part of the risk of being an entrepreneur. There are no guarantees, and that is why business is a bit like gambling. You can make all the right moves, but in the end it's all up to how the cards fall. Being an entrepreneur means loving that gamble and being willing to risk it all for a business you truly believe in.
