What Every Sketch, Brush Artist Should Keep Around

Being an artist not only means applying a unique perspective to the world around you, but it also means having a few essential items regularly on hand. For anyone who has an artist friend, here are several essential items that they would appreciate receiving as gifts or simply as friendship tokens of your support for their work.

1) Although a simple and fairly practical gift, a set of canvases can be just the thing for your friend if they love to paint. Since many canvases tend to get fairly pricey if you are looking for high quality or uniquely shaped ones, your friend will really appreciate this gift. Before purchasing any, however, it will be helpful to know if your friend tends to like to paint on round or rectangular canvases, large or small (or somewhere in between). If they don't have any preference towards size, see if they happen to prefer a certain brand over others.

2) Barnes & Nobles or Borders Bookstore both offer up a huge selection of exquisite sketchbooks that are certain to please any artist. Although some of them tend to be on the pricier side, these sketchbooks really are lovely and come in such a huge selection that you can be sure to find one that will be perfect for your friend. If you happen to know that your friend is getting towards the end of his current sketchbook, then this will be the perfect gift for him.

3) While most artists have their own favorite specific medium, giving them a gift of a set of quality paints in another medium is often an appreciated gift. This will give them the opportunity to experiment with paints outside of their usual range of paints. Often oil paints tend to be more expensive and will certainly be an appreciated gift to any artist. Gouache paints are also another medium that many artists don't get to experiment with too much and would present a great gift opportunity.

4) Paint brushes are also another gift that simply keeps on giving. A new set of quality brushes will be smiled upon by any artist, as they present them with the opportunity to explore and create new masterpieces. Their fine, untainted ends will be an exciting gift to your favorite painter and will be wonderfully practical as well.

5) Finally, you really can't go wrong wit a gift card to their favorite art supplier, whether online or in person. Although some people say that gift cards are impersonal, you will have overcome this slight problem by presenting them with one to an art supplier, thus indicating how you are aware of their personal interests and hobbies.
