1) Do not forget your passports! This might sound pretty silly, but too often people forget this important document. Make a copy of the passport and all the credit cards you plan to carry overseas. Leave these copies with a trusted person back home in case of loss or theft!
2) Make arrangements for a travel cell phone '" just in case your cell is not international, already. Contact your current cell phone provider and get the upgrade to international for the time you will be overseas. Make sure to cancel this upgrade when you return. Hint: You can also rent international cell phones for your overseas trip that you can return when your trip concludes.
3) Contact all the credit card companies you will be using when overseas. Let them know where you will be traveling and for how long. The possibility exists that they will put a stop on your credit cards in they are not informed of your trip ahead of time.
4) Make sure a trusted person back home has information such as the name of your insurance company, and your home alarm company in case an emergency occurs at your home. Make sure this person or person (s) has an extra key and can pick up your mail, newspapers, etc.
5) Considering the high cost of travel these days, it is might be judicious to consider travel insurance.
6) Another consideration could be a credit card that offsets the high cost of your baggage check. Delta has a Sky Miles American Express and if you have it (the cost is $95 a year), and charge your airline tickets with it; you get your bags on the plane for free. Considering that the cost of checking one bag at the airport on Delta is $25 (on the internet $23), it can be quite a cost savings in the long run, especially if you have a family of four that are traveling.
7) Secure your home. Get a programmable light, make sure someone drops in to your home on occasion to make it appear to be inhabited- and again no newspapers, or mail pile-ups.
These are seven important steps people might not think about the first time they take a trip overseas. Thanks, Jill!
