What to Do When Everyone Else is on Vacation

Drew Dungan
Summertime is often marked by traveling far and wide. Many people travel the United States and abroad in search of summertime fun. But what if you're the one left behind? Perhaps you have to work and can't get time off to travel, or maybe you simply don't have the funds to pay for a trip right now. What if your friends and family are off enjoying the summer sights and scenes, and you're stuck at home, what to do then?

When your friends are out of town and you're home alone, no need to fret. There are any number of fun and or productive activities to keep you busy and feel accomplished while others are away. First think of them away in a different way, instead of feeling stuck and left behind, think of them having an interesting experience that they'll be able to share with you upon their return.

Once your mindset is changed, you won't be focused on the fact that you're alone, but an opportunity for solitary contemplation and activities. After all, if you can't have fun and enjoy time alone, how are you able to be of interest to others?

During the year, cleaning is often neglected, take the opportunity for time alone to clean your place of living. You'll be able to give your space a good and deep cleaning that you probably wouldn't do had you had others around distracting you. Think of cleaning as refreshing your life and rejuvenating your surroundings. Once your friends return, invite them over, no doubt they'll notice the effort you put in.

Catch up on movies that you love and others hate. Times alone give you a chance to indulge on all your favorite guilty pleasures. Rent those films you couldn't convince anyone to see with you. Go grab some snacks and hit the theater for a film that you'd be embarrassed to tell anyone you saw and enjoyed.

Take life in your hands and take a chance. Usually when your friends are around and you go out, you only talk to the people you know. Be bold and head out alone, you're bound to meet someone new. Maybe it'll be a good experience, maybe it'll be a bad one, either way you'll have something to talk about when everyone returns. You just might make a new friend, one that is here and now.

When you're caught up in your normal and familiar life, most of us don't read as much as we'd like or should. Catch up on some summer reading. It's the perfect time to sit back and relax, read an interesting book you've wanted to read for a long time. You'll come off more well read and intelligent when everyone gets back, just make sure to suggest the reading to all your friends.

Finally, think of yourself as taking a break from it all. If your loved ones are somewhere that you can write to them, write them a letter. Send them a postcard from home telling them what you've been doing to keep busy. They'll probably return the favor and let you think about what exciting things they might be up to, then beat them at their own game.
