What Everyone Should Know About IGA's Beef and Pork

Amy Brantley
I'll admit that my boyfriend and I don't shop at the IGA very often. In fact, we went in there last Saturday to be reminded of why we don't shop there. The reasons we don't shop there is the IGA rarely has their sale items in stock and everything else costs more than what other grocery stores in the area charge. That I expected. What I didn't expect was the sign I saw at the meat counter. I was shocked and disgusted. I will never buy beef or pork at an IGA as long as this continues.

My boyfriend I were strolling through the store and hit the meat section last. We found a good deal on a large package of chicken and tossed it in the buggy. We then spotted a gigantic t-bone that was big enough for two and looked mouthwatering. We then made our way down to the pork and that's when I noticed a sign that read, "IGA Pork is a Product of the USA/Mexico/Canada". Now, I'm okay with the meat coming from the USA or Canada, but Mexico? There was no way we were going to consciously purchase pork that might possibly have come from Mexico. I mean, do I need to remind anyone of the green onions that came from Mexico that gave people Hepatitis?

We immediately went back to the beef section and saw the same thing, "IGA Beef is a Product of the USA/Mexico/Canada". There went our delicious looking t-bone. We then quickly made our way to the chicken. Thankfully, that sign read, "IGA Chicken is a Product of the USA". We decided to purchase the chicken, but will never purchase beef or pork from an IGA ever again. I don't know how long the IGA has been purchasing meat that's from Mexico because I'd never seen the sign there before. In fact, we hadn't shopped there in months.

Is the fact that the IGA purchases beef and pork that's from Mexico an issue? Where do other stores purchase there meat from? I can answer the first question. Obviously, due to illnesses we've seen in the past caused by foods from Mexico, the health standards aren't as strong there. Therefore, the meat you purchase from Mexico may not be safe. As for whether or not other grocery stores are doing the same thing, we may never know. I suggest checking packages whenever possible or to ask the butcher where the meat comes from.

  • Beef and chicken at the IGA may be a product of Mexico.
  • Check labels or ask a butcher if you are unsure where your meat comes from.

I'm sure this practice is not limited to IGA sadly. We are all too often not aware of the source of our food. Having grown up in farm country and having grandparents that grew and raised most of our food I didn't know how luck our family was. I thought butchering day was gross, canning was ok, and the vegetables and fruits that were stored were common place. We traveled so much with the military that we were not able to do much gardening...although I did whenever I could. We are working on that. We all need to find local farmer's markets, local meat and butchers, and local everything as often as we can.

    Good to know!

I rarely shop IGA unless I need a quick item or two without going in to town. Don't think I've ever bought meat there.

I wouldn't eat meat for Mexico either. A new law that went into effect (I believe at the beginning of the year) requires food products to state what country they came from. I think what scares me even more than food from Mexico is food from China.

I don't know anything about IGA, but that's not the point. It's a good idea in general to check where meat and other products are coming from. Good job!

    Well that's scary.

This is good to know. We have a local IGA and like yours, it tends to be higher priced. We don't shop there often. Now, it will be even less.
